  • Knee Surgery and Why Opiates SUCK

I had knee surgery on Monday to remove parts of my torn meniscus (it was furry lol). The surgery went swimmingly. I was actually walking the same day. I love the surgery center, because, well, the staff is wonderful, my doctors are wonderful and they have really great bedside manner.

I felt okay yesterday enough to gather some belongings and go stay at my boyfriend's house ('tis much quieter than mine). Today was a whole other story. I'm on Percocet for the pain and on the bottle it states that it can be taken with or without food. I'm here to tell you that it can NOT be taken without food. AAAAND to top it all off, my anti-nausea meds are still at home. Bleh. Not a great way to start out my day. Not to mention, the Percocet has drained my ability to eat and sleep, so I feel like a zombie -sigh-

The knee is healing nicely though. I'm starting to be able to bend it and walk a little more without leaning on my crutches too much

Ginger can help a bit. A teaspoon or two on a piece of bread with jam or made into tea isn't too difficult to get down and can help a bit.
If you can't eat I don't know. Perhaps sprinkled on braaaaaaiinss ?

    Congratulations with your mobility.

This is probably TMI, but did you get prescribed stool softeners? Those are also pretty important when you're taking opiates.

I dreamt about zombies last night. I probably should post happier things when I can't sleep ><

And no, he just told me to take Milk of Magnesia (which I won't TOUCH after the last time I used it -shudders-).

Good news though, my anti-nausea meds were hiding in the couch right beside me

Better to not need the MOM. Lots of water, and some extra fiber will prevent constipation, as well as moving around a bit. Prunes, apples, or raisins are good choices to keep the bowels moving. In a pinch, I'd rather take senna than MOM (blech--the one time I tried it, I threw it up it is so nasty).

Ginger ale, saltines or graham crackers are good for a queasy stomach. So is purple grape juice (not white)

Don't blame you for not liking Percocet. I don't like the way opiates make me feel, either. Washed out, blech.

Can you take ibuprofen/Motrin (NSAIDs) after this surgery? They might suit you better. Though I'd take those on a full stomach.

Everyone is different with opiates re full vs empty stomach. Some can, some can't. Sorry

Hope you have a speedy recovery!

Yay mobility! My granny tore a meniscus a few months ago, still having issues with it, tho.
I second the ginger, it's amazing-- but don't eat too much, otherwise it'll overheat your stomach. I survived off of angel food cake and ginger ale when I got my wisdom teeth out, I took hydrocodone. Fortunately, I didn't need much.

I wish I could get opiates for my knee I have a permanently FUBAR'd medial collateral ligament, and can't do anything for it.
              But percosets are fun sometimes

Thank you guys so much! I'm on my feet again and weaned off the Percs after a week and a half. Going back to work after a week failed, but now I'm all better

I may try the high doses of Ibuprofen route if I ever have to have surgery again (gosh, I hope not) or request some kind of low dose notopiate.

You can have the rest of my medicine TowelKing lol Or come visit my PCP, he hands out codeine like candy.

If you have to have surgery again.. Ask for some Ultram, it's a good non narcotic pain killer, I take it for my back and it works great.
