  • Another certification under my belt!

    I passed my Network+ exam today!!! 720 needed to pass, I got a 790

I just wish I was allowed to review the exact questions I got wrong...although I can see why the testing center wouldn't do that (someone could theoretically use it to compile a full test and then sell the answers). I know I bombed the three subnetting questions, and a couple more I probably missed because of poor wording.

    congrats buddy!!

Now, remember, Token Rings are obsolete, and I barely ever see CAT 5 anymore....

Did you have to learn what a vampire tap is/was?

It was in the study guide, but there was nothing on the actual test about them and I think just one question about BNC connectors.

Come to think of it, that's the way the A+ was...spent a lot of time on the obsolete stuff, come test time I never needed it. They're probably more concerned with whether I can recognize the old stuff and have a general idea how it works though.

Congrats! I'm planning on getting my A+ and/or Network+ over the summer, depending if I can find a job or not.

Coax, thick net and thin net, are the ones that used vampire taps, BNC's. Since there was one single piece of copper in the COAX, the tap had to HIT that copper and STAY on it, to transmit.

These were used commonly in token rings and very early networks. If you find this anywhere, take pics, cuz I've NEVER seen this in use. EVAH.

Fiber optic, shoot, I ran that for a data center. My experience is this: Big coffee can ? those 6" across ones? That's the bend for fiber optics. Gentle. GENNNTLLLE. Fiber optics is fun. If you're dumb enough to not label it before you run it...use flashlights. or Pen lights. Light one end up and find out on the other end who's lit. Had to do that a few times cuz the boys wouldnt listen to me about labeling.

Did you have to think about CDMA? And or Wireless?

And they ask for subnetting? Ow. I hate that stuff.

Be thankful that the A+ and Net+ don't ever expire, unlike the MS stuff.

One of the guys in my class who was testing for his A+ told me that, starting this year, they expire.

My A+ is grandfathered in, but apparently the Net+ needs to be re-taken every 3 years. Which I can kinda see...

No real CDMA or wireless questions; the majority of the exam seemed to be trying to trip you up with wording. As for subnetting...a guy who gets paid to tutor people doesn't even get it. He uses the online tools (and probably so does everyone else on the planet). Once IPv6 becomes adopted nobody will have to deal with it anymore I hear.
