  • Jobs!!!! Long, just needed to type. :p

So, this last month has SUCKED hardcore for me ..im searching for a job.

I am extremely unhappy at my current job. I dont wanna draw this out but sucky management change has led to people leaving left and right, leaving short staffing and an overall sense of FUCK YOU from the hospital to the staff. 15 people have left my floor since September, 2 more leave within the next month. We only had a staff of 45 so literally 1/3 of our people have found greener pastures. And its literally the managers doing.

I was supposed to be moving this summer and with that in mind, ive been toughing it out at my job, but with real estate the way it is right now, we're unable to sell our home and make much of a profit, so we're staying put. So now, I need a new job.

I started applying May 2nd. One app in, no word. A second one in, no word. A third, no word...and so on. I have applied, as of right now, to 15 different jobs, 7 within my own hospital and 8 at other hospitals and companies.

I literally went a month with no word, not even a "Hey, we dont like you". I seriously have been getting more despondent and upset as the days go by.

FINALLY, June 2nd I get called and snag an interview at the ER across town. My interview is this Thursday and I am SO nervous. A friend of mine works there and took it upon himself to tell the director how awesome i am, which was nice of him, i just hope the director doesnt think i put him up to it.

Later that same night I check my email and I have an email from the ICU nurse manager and she wants to schedule an interview with me as well! That one is not for 3 weeks but at least, I got a response. A ton of (READ about 75) apps were put in for this one job and so it took her about 2 weeks to sort through them all and pick the most qualified for interviews. I also put in another application on Friday that I'm hopeful about, so we'll see.

Theres hope!!! Im excited for new opportunities that may be coming my way.

Cross your fingers and toes, and other cross able body parts for me...PLEASE

        I can relate.

Last week of March, I finally get a job offer to leave my old company (I work in IT/Data manipulation/monkeying) for a new company that would offer me $2/hr more, better benefits, shorter commute, better environment (was told at old job no chance of deserved promotion until August 2012) - nothing that the old job had was better than the new one.

So I go to the new job......and even though I'm told I have until May 1 (starting on April 4) to get comfortable, on April 19th they say I'm not adjusting quickly enough, and am no longer wanted. Great.

Unemployment, here I come while I job hunt. Unemployment says I'm denied! That's a new rant.

So I've been job hunting since about the 20th of April, and have sent out well over one HUNDRED apps/resumes. I've received perhaps 5 interviews, and bupkus beyond that.

Until last week - things are looking up for me getting a job working for the local school district, being the IT guy for a middle school. (For non Americans, that'd be students between 12-14 years old, just below high school) It's not official yet, as of course they have to do background checks on me, my dogs and my family out to 8th cousins 7 times removed given that it is working with kids....as well they should.

My point? There's a light at the end of the tunnel, and eventually it WON'T be a train coming the other direction.

Hopefully the official word comes down early this week, and then I can focus on picking up a part time job to supplement - the MS job is only a "school year" job, and the wife and I know we'll need more $$.

They appear to be on the opposite side of the country...a little long for a morning commute. Lol. But they look good. Ill keep that in mind if I ever move to Washington like i want to.

              Good luck EyeTea!

Im researching things that will make me appear smarter at this interview, but according to my friend the ER director generally asks ethical questions rather than technical ones. Lets hope my moral fiber isnt frayed this thursday.

FWIW, Washington like Florida does not have a state income tax. IIRC that's Der Cute's neck of the woods, she can give you some advice. My nicece would suggest the Vancouver area, because you can work there w/o income tax and cross the Columbia into Oregon which does not have a sales tax.

Haha Amina, moral questions should be easy. Just say the opposite of what you'd really do.

                  Seriously, good luck.

So I had my interview and it went well.

A few issues though, as there always is. The ER director and nurse manager really liked me (so they said) but Shes looking to fill 3 positions. The first 2 she REALLY wants experienced people in and shes had exactly 2 apps for that. One guy has already been hired, the other guy she cant get a hold of...? So, shes waiting for him to get back to her so they can get him seen and have him decide. She would LOVE to put me in that 3rd position...but now HR is hedging as to whether they will (budget wise) allow her to hire a 3rd. So yeah.

Ill hear next week from her either way. Also, one thing thats REALLY bothering me. There is NO security thats exclusively for the ER, which is not what im used to. People get crazy in the ER, as some may know. My friend, who is a nurse there, was literally picked up and thrown through a window by some crazy large man. The one security guard works as the operator and cant leave the operators room, unless he gets relief. The other guard makes rounds about the hospital, but his ability to respond depends on where he is when stuff is going down. This kinda scares me.

I have another interview coming up and I'm crossing my fingers for that one also.

Hope it works out for you. I can understand your apprehension about security in an ER - I had a friend who was a guard for Denver General, which at the time was the only level 1 trauma ER in the area. The stories.....*shudder*

Thankfully, it worked out for me, as of July 29th I will be working for a middle school that is close enough that if it isn't raining/snowing, I can walk to work if I choose.

It is going to be a challenge (a good one) on winter break, though - this school is about 38 years old and kinda looks like a set of water storage tanks. It...isn't a pretty building. At the end of winter break, we (still hard to imagine it as that) will be moving into a new 25 million dollar building, so it will be interesting to see how smoothly that goes.

I even got to skip the "accuplacer" test they administer to everyone and their dog, as I have a bachelor's degree. I don't think I've ever been so excited to start a new job, and I have to wait another 45+ days! I'm VERY grateful that I got the job, since like most school districts, my district is in a budget crisis and usually tries to fill with internal candidates first. Nobody is getting raises, and nobody not already on a continuing contract is getting one. My first contract is 1 year, then until further notice 1 year again and again.

Dropping apps at retail stores for a part time job, however, has not borne any fruit - YET.

Still waiting to hear from the ER job...its been about 2 weeks.

Just had the ICU interview a few days ago, should hear next week.

On Friday, I have an interview for the position "Clinical Application Analyst". We went over to a new computer documentation system in my hospital and they want nurses to improve the system b/c we "know" what needs to be done to make the process faster and more efficient. Its unlike any job ive ever had; they have always been hands on patient care stuff.

                          Heres the job description:
The Clinical Applications Analyst works extensively with project teams and their department in the transformation and improvement of clinical processes and workflows for use with Epic clinical modules. Understands the clinical processes and operational environments and advocates for effective use of Epic technology to improve patient care through high quality, cost effective solutions. Acts as a liaison between the clinical departments and Information Services. Assists in the development of re-engineered best practice workflow processes and identifies system integration and optimization that provides the greatest technological benefit to the clinical department.
Im a little nervous. Ive been on interviews before but never for this kind of position. Besides being an RN and having an aptitude for technology, as well as picking things up quickly, I really have no further qualifications. They offered an interview though, so I have to believe that I sold myself on my application. Any techie type interview tips anyone wants to share?

Also, they lady tells me the interview is for Friday @ 8am. .. But she didnt give me the place.... LOL. I dont know where to go, but dammit Ill be there on time.

Google nursing informatics--that's what you're applying for. My uncle does that on the MD side.

Man, think about all the triple-charting you could help eliminate! Things should NOT need to be charted in multiple areas of the same program.

Youre telling me!!! I hate redundancy. CHARTING BY EXCEPTION DAMMIT! No one seems to understand that.

I know about NI, I googled it so I could look smart tomorrow morning. LOL. Im thinking I can get a PRN position at the Prison or ED to keep up my clinical skills, but Im really interested in this aspect. We'll see. theres like 5 positions, so depending on application #s, i may be a shoe in.
