  • Spinoff: discontinued food you wish they'd bring back

Mr Hero's thread about discontinued subway sandwiches got me thinking about foods that USED to be offered by dining establishments (be they fast food or otherwise) that you wish they'd bring back. Also this can include stuff you'd buy in the stores that was discontinued.

    For me:

    Subway: Seafood & Crab sub
McDonalds: McRib (and put it on their permanent menu!!!), and McPizza - I actually loved the pizza they made!!!
Pizza Hut: the pizza they made on a half of an italian loaf

Store: Breyer's Viennetta ice cream log

Oh and this was never a real "offering" at McD, but when I worked there as a teen, we'd use 2 Quarter-pounder patties to make a huge "Big Mac" and it was awesome. I'm surprised they never put anything like this on their menu as its so easy to make and so delicious.

Before they switched from Coke to Pepsi products at school, I used to be able to buy Fuze. D= I miss it.

From stores I miss the following: Dunk-a-roos. And peanut butter M&Ms. I dunno if it's just a thing about where I live in particular, but the grocery stores here do *not* carry peanut butter M&Ms.

Can we also include stuff that we wish would be plain ol' brought to the grocery stores in our respective cities? If so, I have several things that can pretty much only be gotten in Venezuela that I wish they had here. Frescolita, Cocosette, Samba....

Mountain Dew Pitch Black II is what I miss the most. Currently, the original Mountain Dew Pitch Black is out but it's not as sour as II, and I love sour stuff. I agree with the dunk-a-roos. Those things were sooo nummy.

For me this is not so much "bring it back" as simply BRING IT - here in Canada there are NO diet Mountain Dew products available - which boggles the mind as they're Pepsi products and we can get diet Pepsi and diet Dr Pepper, but no diet Dew

I also fell in love with Mtn Dew Full Throttle in the States. - Heck I could start an entire thread of stuff that's available in the US that we can't get in Canada for no good reason - like Crystal Light - there are a few flavors we have, but you folks in the US get tons more!! There's no real reason why we shouldn't have the same selections, and anything labeled as "low-carb" cannot be sold in Canada. This is because in its infinite *COUGH COUGH* wisdom, the Canadian health authorities passed a law in 2005 stating that "low-carb" was not a "proven science" so labeling products as such was illegal, never mind you can put "low-fat/ low-salt/ low-whatever" on almost anything else, so we can't get any of the "carb smart" or "carb wise" products here or anything with the wording. It sucks.

Jamba Juice: Their cherry smoothies (SOOO GOOOD)! Cherries were awful to work with but sooo tasty!

Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream: This is more of a wish than a bring back. I wish that they would sell their sweet cream and cookies in grocery stores rather than just at their scoop shops. BEST COOKIES AND CREAM!

Del Taco: I believe that they were called southwestern chicken tacos but they had the delicious corn/chicken/black bean filling. YUM!

That's all I can think of at the moment although I totally agree with you guys on the dunk-a-roos and Viennetta ice cream log. I was just talking to The Boy about that ice cream thing and he thought I was making it up.

            I miss:

            1. Ritz Bitz Sandwiches Smores- I remember the Simpsons promotion. I think Nabisco discontinued them under the Ritz Bits Sandwiches name and changed them to Honey Maid Mini S'mores. (ETA- It looks like my local Food Lion grocery store carries them. I know what I'm going to go buy tomorrow...)

            2. Keebler Cookies called Sweet Spots - My Dad worked for the Keebler Company in the early 1990s. He delivered cookies, wore the Ernie costume, and my Mom would run a free samples booth- I would 'help' on occasion .

            3. Keebler's chips called O'Boisies- I saw a knock-off that claimed to use the O'Boisies recipe in a Dollar Tree once. No, they didn't taste the same.

            4. Nestle Wonder Ball / Nestle Magic Ball- I remember getting a Disney figurine in the middle a few times then the surprizes changed to some kind of nasty sugary candy. I think some kid swallowed the figurine and the parents sued. Or something like that.

Trix cereal, try as I might I can not find it in any grocer up here in the north for years.
Starbucks peppermint mocha frappachino, the one with the crushed candy-canes on top, I could drink that all year.
Also, Pickled Ukrainian Sausages, the last company that made them stopped producing them about 8 years back, I still remember how awesome they tasted.

Oh I LOVE these - they sell them in huge gallon size jars at my supermarket, and they're a staple at bars!!! Its too bad you can't find them - have you tried Costco? That's one place that might carry them.

Things I wish they'd bring back to Australia:

Tomato Salsa Shapes (they're mini biscuits with flavour sprinkled on them, they're savoury and GOOD)
Different Flavoured Fantas (they had some for a while here, but they discontinued them)
Dark Chocolate/Mint/Orange M&Ms (just plain mint, not the crispy mint that's currently selling I believe)
Samboy Flavour Explosion: the chips were flavoured, but also came with a little sachet of the flavouring so you could add MOAR if you wanted.
Flake Luxury/Snow/Dark (as it sounds, flake dipped in chocolate, white chocolate flake and dark chocolate flake)

Also firecat, they sell Dunk-A-Roos down here

Joe's Crab Shack - Beantown Pot:

2 lobsters, 1/2 pound of shrimp, 1 pound of red potatoes, 1 ear of corn, 1 pound of little necks, 1 big sausage.

Closest thing to a New England lobstah bake I've seen outside of New England. Just replace the littlenecks with steamers and add a cup of New England clam chowder and you've got it! (sausage is optional).

Was going to say Jello Pudding Pops - (they were around in the 80's, but they stopped making them) - but I just discovered they are back!!!
Now to find them in my area.
Too tired of living and too tired to end it. What a conundrum.

Butter Brickle ice cream. Breyer's was the last one to still make it afaik, but they've apparently discontinued it. There's a Culver's that has B-B custard once in a great while, but not the same. Also, Wrigley's discontinued Altoids peppermint gum after they bought them out. Too bad, it was my wife's fav.

On a related note, last time I went nostalgia food shopping, there were three or four pretty well stocked online places. It now seems to down to Amazon and

                            http://www.crossroads-market.com/hard-to-find-grocer/

Some prices are good, but they are definitely creeping up.

                              Cheetos Flamin' hot.

But according to fritolay's website, some stores do carry it.
