  • Sun Damage

A couple of weeks ago I got a bad burn on my shoulders and chest. It turned brown, as I expected, but it's darker than I've been in years. (Since moving north my skin has sensitized to the sun again). But now I have many small dark spots (moles, I guess). Does anyone know of any products that will fade those? Vitamin C has worked well for me in terms of reversing sun damage in general, but doesn't usually work on the spots. Or should I go to a dermatologist?

Dermatologist, if you can. Better safe than melanoma.

If they're new, different, or changed: dermatologist.
      Seshat's self-help guide:
      1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
      2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
      3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
      4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I'd get them checked out first; if there nothing to worry about, the derm should be able to give you some recommendation of what to do about lightening them.

I consulted with the Sun expert in the family and she says the following:

GO TO A DOCTOR'S NOW. Not later, NOW.

Yes, she got loud about it.

It's kinda an odd coincidence, guys, but I have to write an article about the dangers of the Sun for our college newspaper.

I would like to know what the Dermatologist says when you get back. (It'll be long after the paper is out but I'd like to know anyways.)

Uh. Yeah. Dermatologist's, now. Black spots that quick is a bad thing. Even if they're harmless, they'll want to remove some to check. Easy 'surgery,' they numb the area and slice a bit, and a stitch or two. (I had a spot taken off my cheek, and I couldn't tell after it healed.)

As the quintessential White Guy (red hair, blue eyes, horrible sunburns as a kid) who's lived in the southwest almost all his life & is now on a 1st name basis with the dermatologist* I'll reiterate:

Sorry, guys, I totally forgot I even posted this. I've faded to a light brown sugar color. The spots are not black, and are not irregular, like freckles. They're very small, light-brown moles, the size of a pinhead. Some are new, I think. I suppose I am now a person who gets freckles.

Strangely, my face is free of any kind of brown spots, even the 2 moles I used to have. They disappeared.
