  • Rental car insurance

When renting a car, what MUST you get when it comes to insurance IF you don't already have a car of your own? I'm going on vacation soon & I want to be sure I get what I need to have.

Technically nothing. However, if you get into an accident, the damage and liability is all out of pocket. Contact some car insurance carriers--get a human and make sure that they understand what you have in mind. Also some trip insurance policies cover rental vehicles. In either case you may want to bring copy of the coverages.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

Don't rental car companies offer their own insurance?

If you dont have insurance already then you definatley want the full coverage option. I rent through Orbitz and they offer their own insurance for like $9 a day which is usually much cheaper than the rental car agency. Just be aware that if you go that option the agency wont know you have the insurance through Orbitz so you have to decline their insurance. I imagine the other travel sites probably offer a similar thing

call your credit card company, a good portion of them include coverage for rental cars in your contract. some info can be found here-always best to double check though.
Honestly.... the image of that in my head made me go "AWESOME!"..... and then I remembered I am terribly strange.-Red dazes

They do, but it is pricey--almost doubling the cost as often as not.

We just got back from Vegas and rented a car for the first time. Mom had called her insurance company and got rental car coverage added to their policy for a 30$ flat fee, good forever and ever.

Had no incidents driving down there either and had a blast with it.

With most rental agencies would charge that ($30) per day. I know this for a fact as that was roughly the quote I got from the agency (green vowel) referred by my insurance last month when the catalytic converter was stolen.
