  • I feel like dancing!

For nearly a year, I've been saving and plotting (and doing about a thousand estimated budgets) so I could move from Nevada to New York.

As of now, I'm only about 2 months of savings away from my goal! 6 months living costs, plus cost of moving. I may not move until Spring, since it snows in the East, and I want to get used to the weather before facing snow. But still, I'm almost there!

    CUE THE JAMS!

Awesome and good luck!! What part of NY are you moving to? I'm in the NYC-area if you're moving into the city and need any advice or anything like that. =)

I'd prefer Brooklyn, but it depends where I find something affordable and relatively safe. And with not-too-crazy roommates.

Brooklyn is nice. Queens isn't too bad either if you live off the 7 train, fast commute to Manhattan. Should be able to find somewhere for $600-700 plus utilities for a room in a nice, safe area. I've had surprisingly good luck with finding roommates online; met one of mine on OkCupid a while ago and found the other on Craigslist.

Shoot me a PM or something when you're to the point of looking at apartments and have an estimated move date, and I can ask around and see if I know anyone who needs a roommate.

I heard good things about both Brooklyn and Queens, although it seems that gentrification is becoming a problem in Brooklyn, which causes rents to rise. A lot of theatre people I know live in Queens.

Brooklyn is a decent place to live. My husband grew up there and we're actually trying to move back there now. We have no reason to stay in New Jersey anymore and hubby wants to go home. But until we find jobs in the area we're stuck where we are.

I've always been interested in new york and would love to live there if I could afford it. That being said rents are the highest there than I've ever seen in my life....can I ask what kind of work you'll be doing that will pay for the high cost of living there?

And Taboo you promised me a long time ago you would post pics of your neighborhood on fb and have I seen them...nope

That is great. If I could get out of Kansas, I would do it in a heartbeat. But I have to stay close to my kids so I can enjoy them for as much time as I get to have with them. Probably looking at moving out of this city though, but probably can't even afford that.

New York is on my list of places I must go before I die. Enjoy

AAAH Oh god I totally forgot. I'll do that this weekend then!

Rent is a lot higher in London than here but NYC is pretty high - you just really have to be willing to have roommates to do it for any reasonable amount.

The best solution to the gentrification is to move to a place about 5-10 blocks over from where it's happening. Still get the benefits of all the new snazzy restaurants and shops without the downside of the higher prices. They've been building a lot of condos that just sit empty forever, it's obnoxious.

That's the power of the Roommate.

Anyway, I've been in Accounting for the last two years, Administrative work before that, and have 2 business degrees. New York is VERY much a business and finance city, so finding a job that pays enough is more or less finding a job, period.

Congrats! If I was rich I'd have a summer place in NY, or at least a second home of some sort. I am not a big fan of winter (hence my move to Florida) but I absolutely love the NYC metro area.

I've never really experienced winter. Lived in Vegas since I was 3, and only left the state during summers.

Though I am already pricing out heavy long undies, 100% wool jackets, and lined leather gloves. Wool hats are covered.

LOL. It's not that bad in the city. In fact, you'll probably hate summer more than winter...you're used to the heat, but not the humidity. Bleh.
