  • Dog people...weirdest thing

My border collie mix just turned 14. She's doing really well save the start of vision problems and some arthritis in her back. She still mostly acts like a dog of only 6. We also have two other dogs, a 7 year old dachshund and the 1 year old xolo service dog.

Recently my roommate came downstairs and noticed a hole had been dug in the wall next to the front closet, on the short wall where the stairs come down. Mind, I've had dogs chew/claw walls before but always at entrances or doorways if they're locked in somewhere, never at a non-egress seemingly random wall. Her first reaction was that the puppy had done it, esp since the xolo was playing with some paint chips.

Then, I noticed a similar hole gouged in the upstairs hallway beside where the washer/dryer cubby is. The dogs are not allowed upstairs unless we are gone, in which case they are gated in the upstairs hallway...and the puppy is crated. Which means it was not the puppy.

So my next logical leap was that it was the doxie. But that evening, as I let the dogs go upstairs on the way to bed (they sleep in my room at the end of the hall) the border collie immediately zeroed in on the spot that was torn up and promptly began clawing and chewing on it. I stopped her immediately, but each time now when we go up to bed she returns to the same spot and tries to go after it again. We tried blocking it off like we did the hole downstairs, and she simply tries to move the blockage. She tries to move the blockage downstairs also when the thought occurs to her.

It's just these two spots of the house. She displays no other signs of anxiety. She can be dead asleep, wake up, wander over and start trying to prod at the wall. There's no anxious body language, no whining...she seems almost bored when she does it (she's not a bored dog, she has tons of toys, the attention of three people, and goes on daily walks. She's always been a laid back dog).

We have no idea why she's doing this. At first we thought there was something in the wall she was smelling but that doesn't seem as likely with two seperate spots on two opposite sides of the house. And it is only those two spots. She sleeps unrestrained in my room at night and has made no attempt to chew or claw any walls.

    Thoughts?

    Mice or other vermin?

OT but look into MSM salt for the dog, it can help with arthritis and isn't expensive ($10 a pound and you use like part of a teaspoon for the dog - talk to your vet about proper dosage).

We haven't noticed any sign of mice or other nasties. We will look around and see if we can spot something. I don't think she'd react this way for mice or rats though, I used to keep several as pets and she never showed any interest in them and has zero prey drive. The puppy, however, has a very high prey drive...I would think if she could even smell something warm and fuzzy to play with she'd be the one tearing things apart.

Thank you for the info about the salts I'll check it out.

Seriously, not two minutes after my last post my room-mate texted me to say she thought she saw a termite!!

We're getting a quote for a pest inspection right now. My dog is a genius

Hmm I would say she might be spotting something odd with the light and it is showing up because of the way her sight is going. Boarder collies and some other breeds tend to get focused on something and obsessed, sometimes it's just something that happens when the dog gets older. I've seen a dog do that sort of thing with metal water bowls, he just was so focused and would attack the bowl over and over again no matter how full it was and would spill the water everywhere until we moved the bowl so there wasn't a reflection. He loved laser light pointers too, great fun in the snow.
Check out around where she is scratching, get to her height and just move around see if you can spot any bit of light shining around there. Maybe that is it, or you will notice if there is a critter visiting. You might get lucky and just need to cover where the light is coming from or reflecting from in that spot.

            Border collies, obsessed? NEVER!!!

Termites - BAD news! Tenting is your best option but some will do poisons, too.

Are you in southeast FL? We have pretty good termite people.

              Nah, I'm in the Northwest.

From what I understand it looks like the infestation is JUST starting, so pending the inspection hopefully the solution will be traps and chemical barrier. Tenting should, hopefully, be a dramatic last resort if all else fails.

Very smart puppy. She should get extra treats for find the mean ol' bugs!
Coffee should be strong, black and chewy! It should strip paint and frighten small children.

Well, that blows that theory. Inspector came out yesterday, not the slightest sign of termites. What roomie saw was apparently a winged aunt queen that looks very similar to the winged pacific dampwood termite queen (yet it seems we don't have ants, either? Guess she was just passing through...)

The mystery of the wall chewing continues...
