  • Hip Tattoo Questions

I don't have any tattoos but I am somewhat interested in getting one. However, I have a few questions about them. One tattoo I would like is one I designed myself a few years back of a tribal style flower placed on my hip area. My questions are:

    1) Are hip tattoos considered "slutty"? (I don't want to give off the wrong message)

    2) I know that hip tattoos can stretch with pregnancy, but about how much do they stretch? (I am not, nor have I ever been preggers; I would like to be someday though)

    3) Would a tattoo suit me okay? (Pics on my page and I consider my body to be the intermediate of pear shaped and hourglass shaped)

    4) About how much would a small hip tattoo cost?

    5) How long would it last?

If you need more information from me, feel free to ask

Personally all I know is that the hip is one of the most painful places to get a tattoo. My friend has many tattoos. Her hip tat is the only incomplete one on her body.

Off topic: she's going to get another on her birthday (end of July) and she's taking me with her so I can get my first.

Eta: any place where the needle would hit bone (hip, top of the feet, top of the hands, shoulder blades, etc) are painful... Depending on your pain tolerance. I ask almost everyone I see that has a tattoo.

      1) Not that I'm aware of.

      2) Not a clue, you should ask a tattoo artist.

      3) That's really something you should decide for yourself, it's your body after all.

      4) It depends on the tattoo and the artist.

      5) The rest of your life, for all practical purposes, though my understanding is that you will need to get it touched up from time to time to keep it looking its best.

Things to keep in mind: Getting a tattoo is fairly permanent, if you have doubts you probably shouldn't do it. Depending on what you want, finding the right artist can be a bitch. When I was cashiering I met a woman who was driving 5 hours to get hers done. I was lucky, I got my tattoo on a whim, and I haven't regretted it, but DAMN was that stupid of me.

Getting mine was pretty freaky, not because of the pain, but because it felt like he had shove a safety pin into my shoulder and was dragging it through my skin. OTOH, I do want another, two, actually. I want a vine that winds from my right ankle to my left shoulder, maybe down my arm a bit, and I know I'll feel unbalanced, so if I do that I'm going to get something on my left thigh, don't know what, though.

Seconded on the "hip is a painful place to get a tattoo"; I don't have one myself, but my brother's girlfriend recently got a string of butterflies from her shoulder down to her hip (four in total), and she said the one on the hip was the only one that was really painful.

Also, seconded on the, "choose your tattoo artist with care"; a friend of mine got a tattoo on her neck (beautiful wolf's head) that started losing form and colour after only a year. She had to get it touched up (at a different artist), and it looks good again, now.

In any case, something I feel very strongly about: get the tattoo on a place that you can cover easily.
I've lost count of the number of women over the years who got a tattoo at a prominent place in younger years (shoulder, neck, ankle, calf, cleavage) and bitterly regretted it when they got a few years' older and noticed that most tattoos look cool in casual wear, but hideous in any kind of formal wear, or nicer dress.
You gotta polish a memory like a stone. Chip off the parts that remind you it was just a game. Work it until it's indistinguishable from any other memory.

If you really want a hip tat, I dont think it should matter. But ive never heard of a hip tat being slutty.

          2) I know that hip tattoos can stretch with pregnancy, but about how much do they stretch? (I am not, nor have I ever been preggers; I would like to be someday though)

Depends on how close to your belly it is an how much weight you gain. How far back on your hip will it be? On the side or the front? This is basically an unanswerable question until you get pregnant and see how you carry.

          3) Would a tattoo suit me okay? (Pics on my page and I consider my body to be the intermediate of pear shaped and hourglass shaped)

Once again, thats up to you. How do you feel about it? I think you'd look fine, but then again i havent seen you with your clothes off.

          4) About how much would a small hip tattoo cost?

Really depends on the area, design, color. Best bet is to get a consultation with a picture of what you want.

          5) How long would it last?

Forever? Lol. You may need a touch up now and then, but it depends on how much sun exposure that area gets and how well your body takes on the ink.

And so there you have it, Good luck. I <3 tattoos.

I want to get one about 1/2 inch above/right of my hip bone. If I do get a tattoo it will be something I designed myself. And I made myself a temp one to see how it would look and my shorts and shirt cover it completly so, unless I decide to work at Hooters, I'm in the clear there

I have a tattoo on my lower back that went all the way to my hips. The worst part was the hips. It took about 2 hours got get mine done. Schedule several hours. I know people who get tattoos in several different trips. just depends on the complexity and our pain tolerance.

No; because it can really only be seen by people you want to see it

                2) I know that hip tattoos can stretch with pregnancy, but about how much do they stretch? (I am not, nor have I ever been preggers; I would like to be someday though)
experiment - before you go to the bathroom (after a full meal, lots of water) push your belly out... this will give you an approximate indication of where you will stretch when/if you get preggers

                3) Would a tattoo suit me okay? (Pics on my page and I consider my body to be the intermediate of pear shaped and hourglass shaped)
you are hourglass, and beautiful! a tattoo suits any person who has the right attitude about them.

                4) About how much would a small hip tattoo cost?
depends on your artist/size/time/details - and some places will do a "discount night" and that does not mean that they are trashy places, but absolutely find one that properly sterilizes; research your shops and artists - ask people who have tattoos where/who they got it done... I've been to 2 different artists - the first guy was amazing, he was gentle, had a light hand, and my anklet still looks beautiful (I got it almost 10 yrs ago) but he was a bit pricey; the 2nd guy was a friend of a friend - got a great price; the work is still just a beautiful, however i will not go back to him, because he was very heavy handed and hurt both me and my mom (she got the same design, just smaller and in a different location); The First guy opened his own shop, but unfortunately i think its closed, and if I can find him, I will have him do many more tats for me

                5) How long would it last?
                as others have said; Forever. It is not a decision to make lightly;

                Hope that helps!

Just as an FYI, since you did ask. Im fairly certain that that area will stretch with pregnancy since its closer to your abdomen than not. Just food for thought. I know plenty of people with belly/hip tattoss that have lasted post pregnancy, i also know some with tattoos that picked up some stretch marks along the way and are somewhat disfigured. Its your body, so do what makes you happy.

I noticed two things about that picture:
                      1) Why the mismatched top and bottom?
                      2) You look great, hon.

I personally have two tattoos, one on each hip. Neither hurt too much imo. It didn't hurt at all on the fleshy parts, but kind of stung on the bony parts. I do not have a high tolerance for pain either. Mine cost $40 each, plus tip, and are fairly small, all one color. Hope this helps.

You should also be aware that some folks get "addicted" to tattoos, from what I've been told. Didn't happen to me (Batman symbol on my left bicep, yes, I am that much of a nerd), but I have been considering getting a second.

My brother in law did mine, and he and his wife are currently more tattoo than human. But at least they all look bloody awesome.
