  • The librarians here are going to love me.

My little brother told me about a book that he started to read but never finished. He doesn’t remember the title, the author, or the character names. So I don’t have any of that information. I do however have a vague description of the plot. He has been looking for this book almost obsessively ever since he read the first part. But with no information it’s hard to impossible to find. I was wondering if there were any helpful bibliophiles who could either recognize the plot or point my to a good web site to key word search this sucker. If I can find it I will win major big brother points and major “neener neener” points at the same time.

My brother and I are fantasy geeks and frequently tell each other about the books we are reading. Usually the names in the book are something like Agilenthous or Dakk’gron so we just ramble through the plot saying “Main Character” “Love Interest” “Best Friend” and “Bad Guy” in place of the names.

Main Character works in a castle library and reads a lot. The library burns down. The Princess gets Main Character an apprenticeship with the castle wizard. Castle Wizard teaches Main Character everything he can. And for some reason Main Character ends up with glowing eyes. After the apprenticeship Princess gets Main Character a job in a militia as a scout.

Can any one help or is it a lost cause?

Sounds a little like Raistlin Majere (Dragon Lance)- esepcailly if your character had hourglass pupils.

BTW - I think you meant librarians, not libertarians. Sneaky autocorrect!

“Libertarians?” Why I have no idea what you mean. SURELY I would never put the wrong word in the subject… no not *I*.

Raistlin rocks, but he has a beefy twin brother and I don’t think he ever worked in a library.

No idea what the books is, but you just mentioned a MAJOR pet peeve of mine. If the reader has to go on an elocution safari every time they get to the main characters (or any frequent characters) name, you're not a good writer. I don't care how interesting you think your plot is, that name is going to knock the reader out of the world every time. Of course, people who pick names like that usually aren't very good a plot anyway.

Uh, right, rant over. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

Raistlin is normally known for being with his twin brother (Carmen I believe). At least until he went godlike. So not sure it would be him. I know a ton of mages, but can't recall the one described in the OP.
Engaged to the amazing Marmalady. She is my Silver Dragon, shining as bright as the sun. I her Black Dragon (though good honestly), dark as night..fierce and strong.

Actually, on the front page, it says "libertarian" on my computer.

eta: It's been corrected now. Now I'm confused.

[geek hat] Actually Raistlin's twin brother is Caramon. [/geek hat]

I can't identify the book in the OP, though it sounds very familiar to me. Sadly my book collection has been annihilated on several occasions due to floods, sewage pipe bursting, and rabidly religious family members throwing out my 'filthy books', so I can't just go through it to see what I've read.

Maybe if I ponder it over the weekend...
