  • I Have a Theory... Stick With Me, My Story Gets Better.

Hey all! I don't post very often on any part of this site really, but I've had an idea that I would like to share with the gainfully employed and long-suffering members of this fine forum.

I, like everyone else that comes to this site, am constantly baffled by the behaviour displayed by SCs on a regular basis. The total disregard for everything from signs stating vital information to the appalling attitudes thrown to the posters of many of the stories. And then, after looking at some other information, I may have gotten a grasp on it. Why these people come to a defenceless employee when they do something wrong and then abuse the hell out of them.

Stick with me on this: I think that, because of the "must keep customers at all costs" measures that many big businesses have, many customers have developed a form of psychopathy.

Think carefully about this. Think about what your typical bad customer is like when you're dealing with them. Now, read this:

The prototypical psychopath has deficits or deviance in several areas: interpersonal relationships, emotion, and behavior. Psychopaths gain satisfaction through antisocial behavior, and do not experience shame, guilt, or remorse for their actions. Psychopaths lack a sense of guilt or remorse for any harm they may have caused others, instead rationalizing the behavior, blaming someone else, or denying it outright. Psychopaths also lack empathy towards others in general, resulting in tactlessness, insensitivity, and contemptuousness. Psychopaths can have a superficial charm about them, enabled by a willingness to say anything to anyone without concern for accuracy or truth. Shallow affect also describes the psychopath's tendency for genuine emotion to be short-lived, glib and egocentric, with an overall cold demeanor. Their behavior is impulsive and irresponsible, often failing to keep a job or defaulting on debts.

    Sound a bit too familiar?

I'm still looking into this right now, because it's just occurred to me, but I may have something. Let me know what you think!

Well, in some cases children act like this, until they mature.
I think expert opinions are needed. Anyone a child and/or adult psych?

Erm...I'm not an expert, but I have a psychology degree?

While it's an interesting theory, I don't think there are really that many full-fledged psychopaths in the world. Some SC's may be like that, but I doubt the majority are.

I could be talking out my arse here, but I wonder if it's because some people see workers in whatever field as "different" from them. Like--you're in a job, you're here to serve ME. And because of that attitude, you're in a separate group. Therefore, it's easier to act like you wouldn't normally. I doubt many SCs act that way all the time with all the people they know--they'd end up quite alone in the world. So perhaps it has something to do with that?

I personall believe that how someone acts when he knows there will be no repercussions is who he really is.

See, that's what got me thinking about it. I know these people are not like this all the time, because they wouldn't be able to function in day-to-day society. I know it's not 100% bona fide psychopathy, but it does seem to be spontaneously generated by certain retail and business settings. I do think it should be looked into more.

Also, I am extremely happy to see someone with a psych degree weighing in on this. I need someone here who knows what to say and how to say it. XD

It is possible that some of these people are genuine psychopaths, or at least have some psychopathic tendencies.

It's more likely to me, however, that most of them are simply assholes.

Of all the theories, I agree with this one the most.
I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem.

I have to agree with this! Stands to reason there are more assholes in society than psychopaths.

But isn't the psychopath and the asshole just two points on the same scale?

                    No. Not at all.

A psychopath has no ability to feel emotion or empathy or compassion, and imitates these emotions that they see in others. They have no choice in what they are.

An asshole CHOOSES to be a fuckwad, although they have the ability to not be so.

In other words, despite the fact that their actions may seem similar, a psychopath is not simply a bigger asshole than an asshole. Actually, psychopaths can come across as very nice people, due to their being forced to act like normal people. Not all psychopaths come across as assholes. Hell, not all psychopaths are assholes at all, or killers, or bad people. Some of them imitate normal people so well that they end up doing rather well for themselves. Assholes, on the other hand, are merely people who choose to behave badly towards others. Hell, I often describe myself as an asshole, for I do have the ability to slip into that mode if I have the need or desire to. Ask my nieces' dates, or the managers of my apartment complex, or any incompetent fuckup I've been forced to deal with. Etc., etc.

In short, one is born a psychopath, but one chooses to be an asshole.
