  • Poster Printing

    So I need help, friends.

I had a piece of artwork commissioned that is 8400 x 3659 pixels. It is EPIC. PM if you want to see it

I'd like to get a poster printed of it, but I'm afraid due to the dimensions being wrong for the typical sized (20x30", 16x24", etc.) poster prints.

If I get it printed, will there just be white space on the sides? Will they try stretching it to make it work? Or does where I go to get it done affect that? Ideally, it'll not be altered and the leftover space would be black. Is there a way I could get that done? Second to that, is there a way to get it custom printed into an irregular poster size?

Call some printers and sign shops and simply tell them what you want. Try your local Kinko's, even (excuse me, FED EX.) You'll find someone to do it without too much hassle, I think. Just find out what various vendors can do and make a choice. Specify you do not want the dimensions altered. Most professional houses figure you don't want any distortion, but do specify anyways.

I worked at a print shop, as in straight-up legit printing-- playbills, post-thingies that you see around campus like table tents, posters, books, brochures, lamination of whatever, foamcore mounting, crazy types of paper and inks, you get it. Small-peanuts places compared to most university presses and publication houses, but still a print shop!
PatioKitty is correct; I agree with RK, most professional houses figure you don't want any distortion, but tell them anyway. They also offer paper choices, and assume you want the best resolution/the resolution you give them. EDIT: glossy, semi-gloss, plain, various weights... ask what they have! it's fabulous...
When it gets printed out on the poster-printer, there will be white space up to the width of the paper supported/on the printer. You can get that cut off at the shop too, ask them to show you the poster process if you are in any way concerned.
EDIT: you may have to get the image taped together, but it looks good/can't even tell where it got cut. 48/50 inches is within the 60 inch width of my small shop's poster printer.
EDIT: PrintingPlace will have to convert whatever format the item is in to something the printer can deal with, and can cause hangups. This is part of the job of the poster-printer guy to figure it out, so if it does come out odd, this might be why-- ask to have it fixed. Most places won't accept anything less than "does it look like the sample/what they gave us? Yes. Awesome."
This is a sample of a poster printer. Spool of paper in that round thing.

I have little experience with pricing-- so how much would a nearly-six-foot-long, nearly four-feet-tall poster cost, just to print it out?
I know there's a "handling' price where the technical manipulation of printing the poster is dealt with, and trim costs (usually done in time increments... or at least it was at my shop).
PatioKitty, my shop uses HP as well.
