    London's burning

    All the trouble in Hackney is less than 5 minutes from my mother's house. She is in hospital tonight (after a scheduled operation), but is a bit worried about her house.

    It is very scary to see places I know really well on fire, and with riot police.

    Walthamstow was hit yesterday, and now there's rumours of trouble at Stratford. (Basically I am on a bus route between the two places, nearer Stratford). I live on the main road, over shops.

    All the shops closed early today. I tried to order pizza, but the delivery place was closed (though it isn't somewhere directly affected). I popped to the little shop that was the only thing open and walked past 2 silly girls (evidenced by their giggle), one saying to the other "It's history in the making. You must get out there and fight".

    I just arrived a few hours ago to my friends place who lives just off the central line. Currently we're watching the live coverage. Its very worrying and I really hope no innocent people are hurt.
    Arp happens!

      Stay safe you guys!! Hopefully it will stop soon.

          Their rioting in Birmingham by me now,just idiots looking for an excuse to rob shops .
          Apparently they are planning to riot in Wolverhampton tomorrow

              Originally it started as a demonstration about the police shooting an armed person.
              Now its just an excuse to steal and destroy.

                I hope it's OK to link to something I posted on another forum. I linked to all the things explaining it here when the first riot broke out. It includes links to one of the original reports, as well as to the riotous history of the original location, why people don't trust the police very much, and a story about some current events in the Hackney housing estate that went on to be the epicentre of the problems there today.

                Theoretically it is complicated, but mostly it does seem to be people who enjoy violence and trouble enjoying violence and trouble. There is indeed a lot of unhappiness, tension, fear and frustration in the communities - but the people feeling that are now also hiding away in fear of rioters. The ones on the street are the ones who do quite well from the problems in the communities.

                I would have rather more sympathy if these had started with unrest about the general political issues (economy etc.) and had led to rioting in the political centre of the city. These are just already poor and disadvantaged communities being ripped up.

                    Hopefully, but currently still getting worse.

                    It's not just London now - it's Bristol, Liverpool and Birmingham too, In London it's spread to include everywhere from Hackney, to Ealing, Croydon, Lewisham - and really pretty much everywhere. On top of that there's now a major fire in an Industrial Area building.

                    I have insomnia, and much as I hate this happening here I have to say sitting up all night is a lot interesting.

                      Sounds an awful lot like the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. I hope everyone on the other side of the pond stays safe and away from the nastiness.

                          Things seem to have passed in her area. Unfortunately my home is probably worse. My area has escaped so far - but where there has been trouble it's been aimed mostly at shops. My mother is in a residential street, I live over a shop on the high road. (This also ignores the fact that we'd kill each other within 24 hours).

                          Hopefully things will calm down over the course of the day.

                            Is this all stemming from the original riot that was caused by the cops shooting some dbag who shot at the cops in the first place?

                              I have several friends who live in London, one of which got VERY close to the riots. They were right outside his house. Thankfully his home was left untouched, but the photos he put on Facebook are nothing short of terrifying.

                              I live in the North of England, and I have found myself getting very worried and scared as it gradually travels North. There has been trouble in Bristol, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester.

                              I do not understand why they are doing this. This is not a protest or political statement. They are kids, and they are attacking innocent people.
