    http://www.felinexpress.com/cat-heal...-lipidosis.asp

My boy cat, Hetfield, is more than likely suffering from it.

Last vet visit before we moved, he weighed around 14 lbs. (He's big framed, so he should weigh about 12 lbs.) Today, he got weighed again and he weighs 9.8 lbs.

We've noticed he's gotten noticeably thinner and lighter these past few weeks, but weren't horribly worried. Just LOTS of stress from moving, more cats, and the occasional visit from my BIL and his dog. He's always been a bit of a scaredy cat, anyway.

However, we haven't seen him eating, which if you noticed his weight written above, should've tipped us off a hell of a lot sooner. The man of the household did some looking online, and found something about FHL. We called the vet that my mom and BIL use last Friday. (She has office hours on Tuesdays and Fridays...the rest of the time, she makes house calls.) They were able to squeeze us in this afternoon. After noticing slight jaundice, they did some blood work.

As a side note, I feel responsible. I could've called the vet we used when we lived in GB, but they're expensive and they charge even more when it's what they judge to be an emergency. I'm still unemployed AND planning my wedding for Sept. 10th, so I don't have a lot of money to spare, and I selfishly didn't want to spend it on vet bills. I feel like the worst kitty mommy ever.

Anyhoo...the vet sent us home with two syringes, two cans of high calorie food, a bottle of pills--appetite stimulant, and some things to try to get him to eat.

I've been crying off and on for over 9 hours already.

<hugs> Don't beat yourself up over it. You still care deeply for him, and went to get him medical care. I have faith he'll pull through, especially with such a loving kitty mommy. =)

One of my cats has had it a couple of time. He has FIV (and thus no immune system). If he can respond to treatment and make it back, then your boy should too. Don't beat yourself up. We look after them the best we can. Fingers crossed that he'll bounce right back.

I've been at my grandma's since yesterday afternoon, because she's finishing up my wedding dress (she doesn't like the way the sleeves look and is encouraging me to go sleeveless. O.o She'll buy me long white gloves, though...and I don't have nearly enough time to tone my upper arms!!).

Of course, since I'm not home, I miss Hetfield crying/meowing in pain and being lethargic. The MOTH took him to the vet in GB this morning and they did some testing and x-rays. Good news/bad news is--no feline leukemia and no bowel obstructions or things of that nature. Good because...well, it's obvious. Bad because something else is causing this stuff.

After doing whatever many tests (I'm not sure, really because I wasn't there), a referral is made to an emergency hospital in Appleton. Either there or at the vet in GB, they do some blood work on my poor kitty. Liver levels are so high they're off the charts and they had to dilute four times before they got a usable number.

As of right now, he's got feline pancreatitis and a fatty liver and was dehydrated. He'll be having surgery in the morning to get a feeding tube and a liver biopsy. The MOTH says the doctor he's been in contact with sounds cautiously optimistic.

If you feel bad, I should feel terrible.

I have 4 cats, and they're all overdue for a vet visit. I mean years overdue.

I got my oldest, Lucky back in Oct. 2002, as a rescued stray. I got her checked out and all her shots back then, but other than getting her medicated for a tapeworm she hasn't seen the vet since.

I adopted Chloe from my old boss, fully vetted, back in 2004. Other than having her spayed, she hasn't been to the vet either.

I adopted a third one off of Petfinder shortly after adopting Chloe, got her checked out and her first round of shots, and that was it.

My fourth cat was just a random cat that appeared out of nowhere back in December. She was wearing a collar, but despite placing online ads and notifying the shelters, no one has claimed her, so I guess I'm stuck with her. She hasn't seen the vet, but seems healthy.

These are all indoor cats, BTW. I content myself with the knowledge that, despite the fact that I can't afford regular vet care ATM, unlike the millions of cats sitting in shelters, being euthanized, or roaming the streets, these 4 are sheltered, fed, watered and petted. (Although, if I find that something is obviously wrong with one of them that I can't cure myself, yes, they WILL see a vet.)

I hope your furbaby gets better.

Visited my boy in the animal hospital today.

He was groggy from getting the feeding tube put in...and he apparently peed while he was still drugged up.

The liver biopsy wasn't done...something about clotting issues.

They said they would see how he accepts food, and he just might come home tomorrow.

<hugs> I'll keep on praying for him, just keep up hope! Cats are amazingly resilient animals, so just think positive.

Now they're saying he can't come home today. They say he's unhappy at the hospital, but doing fine otherwise. Maybe they're hoping to be able to do the liver biopsy before we bring him home (now tentatively scheduled for tomorrow)...?

It's tough. He's my baby and I miss him.

Visited him today. He seemed lethargic, but the vet thought it was due to toxins because of his liver and said he'd drug my boy up. We learned how to feed him through his tube.

The vet called a little while ago (scary! No calls from an animal hospital this late can be good, right?) and said that Hetfield's liver levels were going down and his clotting is getting better. Yay!!!

Have I mentioned that I miss my boy?

On the chance that anyone's still reading this, Hetfield got to come home today!!!

He growled when I went to get him from under the bed to feed him, but he's slowly getting back to normal. He even peed on the MOTH's side of the bed, like he always does when stressed or out of spite.

Had to take him in yesterday because the tube came out.

                          Yeah.

Got the call just after midnight to pick him up.

He's been doing well today, but was scared by the thunder.
