  • Calling all Canadians

I'm going on an eight-day holiday to Toronto at the end of September. Two of those days I will be visiting Niagara Falls.

Is anyone from Toronto or know Toronto? I was hoping for advice on what to see and do. And maybe where to avoid.

Also, how does the whole tipping thing work in Canada? How much is usually given? Is it factored into the total? Do you tip in when staying in hotels? Someone posted about tipping the housekeeping staff.

I'm from Oz and we only really tip if we feel the service/food deserves it. Even then it's usually just rounding up to the nearest 5 or 10.

    Any help/advice welcome.

Not from TO., but I can give some advice, based on a rural life.

Tipping is, in resturants, usually between 10-15% of the total, with a 'zero' tip basically telling the server that they were utterly abysmal.

In general, if they're fast, polite, and ask how your meal is doing after it's been served, that's worth the minimum tip, but we've all heard that mentioned before.

I can't really help you with hotels, though; I don't go out to 'em often enough to have any idea on proper tipping protocol in that regard.

There's a lot to see and do in Toronto. Spend a least a day poking around Yonge st. Visit the CN Tower (a tad pricey but worth it). You can catch a Jays game for next to nothing. Baseball tickets are cheap in Canada. There's also the Hockey Hall of Fame if that's more your thing. Also check out the Lakeshore area not too far from downtown, there are some fun places there. You might also want to pay a visit to Nathan Phillips Square where city hall is. Enjoy your trip.

Oh and Niagara Falls can be fun but expect to pay a premium for everything. Go on the Maid of the Mist if you can. seeing the falls up close is amazing. Most businesses in Niagara take US or Canadian money.

If are are into wine, check "Niagara on the Lake"... a lot of wineries give tours, there lots of small boutique shops, etc. Should be pleasant weather for that sort of thing, even in September. (September is when the weather turns from summer to fall around here, so temps could be as low as 10, 12 C at night. But the Niagra region tends to warmer).

Toronto has a decent theatre district. Check out Mirvish.com for one of the well known outfits. ROM (Royal Ontario Museum) if you like museums.

Hmm... what else? The problem is that I live here so I sort of oblivious to what there is to do!
