Earthquake

I think I've only been through one earthquake here in Idaho and it happened during the night...so a lot of people didn't even wake up. I think I might have for about two seconds and then went back to sleep. Woke up in the morning and discovered our living room wall had cracked!

I also think in regards to tornadoes that they take one look at the mountains around here and go "Fuck this!"

The thing we really have to worry about is the volcano under Yellowstone...not so much earthquakes, tornadoes, etc. I don't know what the tectonic plates are like underneath Idaho, though, if there are any faults and stuff here. I just know it's not like the east coast.

I slept right through it. Then I went in to work at a factory where people get alarmed if the floor isn't shaking -- because that would mean the presses have gone down.

Reports from the family:

Sis was at home with the dog. Mocha (said dog) was freaking out and hiding in her crate, while Sis mistook the shaking ceiling for the roof collapsing. (We have some minor hail damage that's going to get repaired soon.) After it subsided, she took Mocha out, and to check for roof damage-- and saw our neighbors outside and only THEN thought "Oh! Must have been an earthquake."

Dad was at work on the 10th floor of a building, prepping for a presentation, when the floor shook and the building swayed. By the time they realized it was a quake and got out to the hall, it had subsided.

Mom was out running errands and was in the car. She had no idea there was a quake until they started mentioning it on the radio.

We had a 5.3 hit us late Monday night right before midnight here in Colorado. I was too busy watching TV to even notice. Hell...I didn't even know we had that particular quake until last night. XD


As for the east coast quake, I have family out in Pennsylvania that did feel it. They're all okay though.

I live in eastern Tennessee near the Virginia border. I didn't feel the quake, myself. My dog was spazzing out like crazy about the time the quake was said to have happened. I was outside getting ready to take my daughter to the babysitter. I just figured at the time that he was spazzing out because I was leaving him home alone. After I heard about the quake later in the day, then I realized he must have sensed it.

Nothing major. The major faults and stuff are almost always on the edges of plates: for the North American plate, that's far northern Canada, the west coast of the continent, the middle of the Atlantic ocean (and the middle of Iceland), and part of the join between the NA and SA plates.

Edit to add: Hawaii is the result of what's called a 'Hot Spot'. The magma underneath the Pacific plate is especially hot and tends to rise there. You can see the path the Pacific plate has taken since the Hot Spot formed, by following the trail of Hawaiian islands. It's one of the few types of mid-plate tectonic activity.

Other interesting mid-plate volcanic stuff includes Yellowstone (I seem to recall that the crust is thinner there, or it's a hot spot or something), and according to one of my grade school science teachers, the Adirondack Mountains in NY were a volcanic bubble. One of those ones that isn't likely to "pop" anytime soon, though. (I am an amateur geologist too lazy to look this up right now)
