I don't think I shared this story, but it was reminded to me by The "I died a little" post.

I was talking with a CW at work who is about my age, and we were talking and a 20 something CW was listening in. He was telling me about how on Jimmy Kimmel he was using the "sex ruins the legs" from Rocky as a 'meme', but we both drew a blank on the actor who played the trainer in Rocky (Burgess Merideth). Then I go "Oh You know, The Penguin"

CW my age goes "Oh Yeah....."

Younger CW Says "No! He wasn't the Penguin... Danny DeVito was the Penguin"

Then I smacked him....

I was riding in the car with my stepdaughter when she was a teenager and as always, I had the radio on. Don Henley starts singing "The Boys of Summer" and I joined in. Shortly thereafter, SD says in a very confused voice, "I thought The Ataris did this song??" I think I had to explain the "cover song" concept to her. To be fair, it often surprised me (and sometimes still does) that a song I hear and love, even one I've known for years, was not original to the artist I thought it was. C'est la vie...

After hearing it on the radio, I was singing "It's My Life" to myself. My evil minions heard me singing, and started making fun of me because it was sung by a girl.

Never mind that I was singing a full octave lower than Gwen Stefani did...

Still, I was able to shut them up by telling them No Doubt's version was a cover, and the original vocalist was male...

Burgess Meredith played the Penguin on the 1960's Batman show. He was the first Penguin I ever knew, and I'm only 26.

A local tv station around here used to show the old Batman series when I was a kid, and I watched it every day. Heh, I even used to sing along with the theme song.

I miss that show. I wish they'd release it on DVD.

I felt really old (I'm 29 btw) when I told a couple coworkers the other day we didn't use computers daily in school until I was either a sophomore or junior (so, 98 or 99). They looked at me like I was ancient. Granted, some of them are like 18 or 19 and were probably born with a smartphone in their hands.

haha...I did that once when I was younger and got smack upside the head by my (much older) brother. To be fair though, it was when the song came out and was popular.

and I must admit that it took me a minute to figure out why the kid in the OP was wrong. I always forget about that show.

My favorite version of this was between my young nephew and my dad. When my nephew was 6-7ish he was hugely into Batman. One day he was watching a Batman cartoon and turned to Dad and said "Papa, Batman is awesome! Don't you wish that you had him around when you were a kid?"
