  • The Streak is Broken!

Many sports fans are superstitious. Some think that they are a jinx. And I was beginning to think that about myself as well, as prior to last night, and not counting meaningless preseason contests, the last NINE sporting events I had attended, my team (Diamondbacks, Sun Devils, Raiders) had lost.

So last night, with tickets we had purchased two weeks ago, 3 of my friends and I attended the Diamondbacks-Giants game, at which the Dbacks could clinch the division title simply by winning. The stadium was electric. We were fired up. And early on, it was a pitcher's duel, with one of the Giants' best doing a number on the Snakes, and sadly, seeing the Giants gettin many hits, but luckily only one run.

And then the Dbacks tied it at one.

And then, in the bottom of the eighth, with two on, Paul Goldschmidt hit a triple, scoring two.

AND GIVING THE DBACKS THE DIVISION.
    NL West champions.

And the streak is broken! The streak, she is dead.

Amazingly enough, today I still have a voice. I have no idea how.

No, seriously. There were people who didn't even know me taking pictures of me because of how much I was going nuts after the last out. I was going ballistic.

    My friends were very amused.

And after the game, my 3 friends were all sticks in the mud and went home. Me, I couldn't sit still, and had to celebrate.

    Which. I. Did.

Hate to pee on your parade, but I have to make a slight correction, and I know how important accuracy of facts is to you.
That would be The Who, and not Horatio.

    Aside from that, congrats. LOL

And more streaks fall. ASU, who had not beaten USC in 11 tries, dating back to their 1998 victory, beat the #23 ranked Trojans last night 43-22. The game was not as lopsided as the final score would indicate, as the Sun Devils had a few scores late to put it out of reach, but MAN was this sweet! Naturally, I was there, appropriately enough in Section 8, with a perfect view of the field from just above the 30 yard line. Naturally, I continue to go nuts.

To add icing to my celebratory cupcake, Oregon dismantled Arizona 56-31 AND the Diamondbacks embarrassed the Giants 15-2 and eliminated them from playoff consideration.

Now, if only my Raiders can continue this fantastic weekend by beating the favored visiting Jets, who they have not beaten in 3 previous tries. Hey, it's the weekend of broken streaks, so why not?

            GO RAIDERS!

Oh, I know full well it's The Who and not Caine, but I was channeling, not quoting. And trust me, nothing could spoil my parade, pee or otherwise.

I would imagine that kind of streak would be painful to have broken. Just saying.

                This is just ridiculous.

I mean, seriously, this would have been a good sports weekend in general anyway, had all I done was watch it on tv. But being at some of it? Ridiculous.

To wit: the Diamondbacks clinched their division (and thus a playoff spot) on Friday, and I was at that game. To add to it, they swept the Giants, eliminating them from the playoffs (including one embarrassing ass-kicking Saturday), and are only one game behind Milwaukee for the second-best record in the NL and the chance to host the first round series.

The Sun Devils beat USC for the first time in 12 tries, knocking off a ranked team for the second time in 3 weeks, and I was there, with great seats, AND in downtown Tempe afterwards for the after party and the post-win glow. It was truly awesome! To add to it, the University of Arizona got embarrassed by Oregon, losing badly for the third straight week.

And just to make my weekend complete, the Raiders came from behind to win their home opener against the heavily favored Jets, and the Broncos lost.

Yes, I may be repeating some of this. I don't care. How freakin' AWESOME was this as a sports weekend for one person?

Sadly, tomorrow I have to get on a plane and go to Key West. (And there's a statement you won't see most people utter all that often!) These 10 days in Phoenix went by way too fast....and sadly, so did much of my money.

I am very much appreciating the fact that I made a point of taking off work for Tuesday, the day AFTER I get back from here. And, unless Delta totally fucks me over and leaves me stranded in Atlanta tomorrow night, I plan on spending Tuesday mostly in bed watching various things I recorded on my DVR.

Vacations go by so fast! But this one was pretty sweet, overall.

I will say yay Diamondbacks, mainly because that was my high school's mascot.

And seeing "you're adorable when you're excited" made me first go and then

Just remember, Becks, the D-backs hold the tie-breaker from winning the season series, so if the Snakes actually do make up that one game on the Brew Crew, the D-backs get the 2 slot, and thus home field. We have the Dodgers for three games at home. In other words, your boys better not take their feet off the gas! Then again, y'all have 3 against the Pirates, so you may actually have the advantage there.

In the wild card race, the Cardinals are only a game back, and they get 3 against Houston, whereas slumping Atlanta has 3 against the Phillies. Advantage: Cards. I almost feel bad for the Braves.

                      Almost.

If Fielder would remember he's a free agent after this season and hit like he's supposed to, we shouldn't have a problem.

You realize, of course, that the Braves' last three games are against the Phils, and that the Cardinals have three against the Astros, and St. Louis is only a game behind Atlanta for the wild card...in other words, your team can be the one to knock the Braves out of the playoffs, just as my Diamondbacks did to the hate Giants this weekend.

And if that happens, Philly will face St. Louis, and Arizona will face Milwaukee, with the only question being who hosts the first round series, the Snakes or the Brew Crew. (Obviously the Phillies have home field throughout the playoffs.)
