A friend of mine has her daughter in the hospital.
Daughter (Em) has a collapsed trachea, lungs not working, asthma; just not breathing on her own. She's alive, but the respiratory system is f'd up right now.

Em's going to transfer to a hospital that handles bigger/complex cases. Please send good thoughts to them both. Mom-friend has a spine of steel and a brass pair, but this is difficult for everyone. Mom-friend lost her own mother 6 mo ago.

Anything helps.

Mom-friend and Daughter have been transferred from their hospital to the local University Hospital; much more high-tech and specialists abound.
No news on how she's feeling, but with docs who are better fit for this issue, I'm hoping this gets better soon. I'll update soon.

Kid's now totally checked in @ Uni Hospital. Mom told me that there are 2 surgeries needed, a tracheostomy ? and a fundo(something) but kiddo's too unstable to be operated on. First task is to stabilize her. In the ICU, away from home and her goggies. Mom and Kiddo's sister are doing shifts being with her. More thoughts needed, Em needs to be stabilized.

Update

I spent time with Christy, Em's mom. Christy needed a few hours out of the hospital; being grounded in there w/o transportation = sucks. We went to get groceries and have a drink.
Christy tells me that Em's still in ICU, not really stabilizing yet. Em can't get solid foods in (due to the O2 mask), she's still not breathing on her own. Em's really weak, can't move much due to trying to breathe so hard. O2 is saturated, good, but she's losing weight and isn't really doing so hot.
There are a TEAM of doctors meeting up on Monday. Pulmonary Doc, ENT doc, GI doc, Pediatrician doc, Everyone except a dentist and an orthopedic doc, for fucks' sake.

Good part: in a Uni hospital, it's the best of the best. She's in ICU, not even spitting distance from the nurses. She's got people caring for her, talking to her, hourly checkups. Keep up the good thoughts guys, I don't like where it's going (my gut says it's not good, after hearing what's going on today.)

Christy Mom was so wound up she needed 2 Redbull and Vodkas, a few ciggies and a long walk around. She couldn't shut up, her anxiety was pretty bad. I've promised her that if she needs munchies or a few hours out, to just text me, and I'll come by. I'm not far away at all.

How did this all happen do begin with, if you know/can give details? Poor Em Sending good thoughts. Hope she recovers enough for them to operate soon.

It's going downhill..or the docs are trying new things. Em's in isolation now, in the ICU. No visitors, and you better scrub the heck up and wear special stuff to even go in.

As for how:
What I know about the family is that their immune systems are not kosher. Mom's got MS, Em's got severe asthma and other immune system issues.
Em had a fundo (google it) for GERD. It's wrapping slack of the stomach around the bottom of esophagus to "make" a new valve so the stomach acid doesn't go north.
But somehow, her trachea collapsed (and that's not common AT ALL).
The trachea is collapsed enough that the respirator has to have enough air pressure to PUSH in the air thru her throat to her lungs. Ya squish a paper towel cardboard, that's what she's got.
So she can't eat - take the mask off, no breathing, ARGH. She can't have the tummy issue fixed either - they go down the esophagus to fix the fundo..but you can't take the mask off to do this!! You can't fix the trachea, you need to go down the throat to put stents etc in..but the mask...needs to be on.
Catch 22 here, big time. All the appropriate meds are used to try to stabilize her, soothe her lungs, etc.
She has to gasp, suck a protein shake, swallow, mask on again...repeat. Yeah, not pretty.

Christy and I went for a drink, she needed out of that place so bad. Just..get out into civilization. But we did NOT go far, we would have been able to get back within minutes if something happened.

I'm scared for Christy; her mother died about 6, 8 months ago. She's had some serious life issues pop up since then. She just does NOT need this.

But the hospital is the bomb, she's got the Uber Doctors teaming up, kiddo's keeping spirits up. god. just..god.
