  • What am I doing wrong?!

That is the question I have been asking myself over the last few weeks.

So while I'm currently on an exemption from job-hunting by the unemployment agency due to my teaching placement, I'm only JUST starting to hear back from the jobs I applied for. I specified that yes I was studying, yes my availability would be slightly limited, but I could come in and do days.

I have put on my resume where I worked.
I checked to ensure that my referees were reliable.
I got help with my cover letter (although not the RIGHT kind of help -.-)
I got help with my resume.

And yet I am STILL getting rejected...

In all honesty, I have to wonder if I said that I was 15 (and didn't change anything else on my resume), they wouldn't even bother to glance at the resume, they would hire me on the spot. That seems to be the attitude of companies these days.

Either that, or somehow I've been blacklisted across the entire state.

Last summer when I was looking for work the 4 companies that called me back all said the same thing when I was rejected. "You were our second choice." Which was unbarably frustrating because they never said what number one did to surpass me. Though I did find out that all of them were younger than me and in an earlier period of their education; High school or first year college.

It is impossible to find a job. You're right when you said that it seems they are only hiring teenagers. The irony for me on that front is that, when I was 15, I couldn't get a job because they gave it to all the college kids. Now that I am in university, they always go to the teens.

Do you think you could trick them into think you're 15?

It is sorely tempting, but I think it would hurt my chances when I get hired and say "oh, by the way I'm actually 21". Plus, these days they do require you to show proof that you're an Australian citizen-ALL forms of acceptable citizenship documents have birthdates on them.

Same here, the last several jobs ive interviewed for I ended up being second choice. I only got the one I have now because choice number one didn't work out.

I noticed that too. All the jobs are going to teenagers and kids just out of school. (Not college, high school.)

Not in this area my daughter is a high school graduate and can't find a job for nothing. She's 21 now but it's been that way since she was 18.

it's easier to get a job if you're a student. it means you don't mind part time, it means you're in the area for a couple years and it means you most likely don't know any better.

I live in a town with two colleges and a lot of highschools, jobs are scarce, I'm clinging with a death grip on mine. I must have handed out 200 resumes before getting this job.
