The bit you spoilered is actually the part that pisses me off the most. It was totally unnecessary, and a doctor would have known better. >_<

I kind of have a thing against movies that don't do their research for basic plot elements.

I'm with the other old-school suspense people, as I mentioned before. Legend of Hell House is a great example. It doesn't hurt that it's got Roddy McDowall in it.

Actually, thinking about it, the original Creep Show had some great moments.

Oh, I just thought of one that I booked and people kept coming back to watch it (fairly rare occurance for a foreign film). I don't know how hard it would be to find and it is subtitiled (it is French):

You will never look at dogs quite the same way for a long time.
I double billed it with Man Bites Dog (also French) I think. That one isn't scary but it is very dark humor.

The original Alien was scary. So was an old Disney flick called Watcher in the Woods. Though the latter might be as much because I saw it in the theater as a kid as much as anything.

While we are going old school - what about the Eyes of Laura Mars? Or Black Christmas (1974) dir. by Bob Clark (yes, the man who brought us Porkey's and A Christmas Story).

Yup, that's the one with Bette Davis. My brother and I were 8 and 9 when it came out and we saw it in the theater. At one point, I left the auditorium because it was too scary; then there was a scream, so I had to go back in to see what happened. At another point entirely, my brother did the same exact thing.

There's not a lot of actual action in the movie, but there's a lot of tension.

It's a shame more movies don't try to be genuinely scary over gory or gruesome, tho I do like a good gruesome flick, too. 13 Ghosts was fairly well-done, I thought.

13 Ghosts - the William Castle original or the Tony Scholub remake? I did like the remake the ghosts were much scarier to me.
The remake for the Shining was good to (IMO).
OP - the remake of Nightmare is not good - again IMO - make sure you see the original.

I was just thinking Magic scared the bezeebers out of me when I was young (I watched it on HBO at a friend's) I watched it again last year - I have no idea why it was so scary then - it wasn't scary to me at all now.

I'm not a big fan of movies like Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elmstreet, or Halloween; and I don't plan on seeing The Woman in Black (roomie wants to see it though). But I like movies like Exorcism of Emily Rose.

I really like scary movies, but agree with others that the torture porn (great description, BTW, totally stealing it) just makes me change the movie or channel. I really liked the original versions of The Grudge and One Missed Call - totally worth the subtitles

I'ma go old school with my suggestion: The Birds. That movie still scared the crap outta me. And it gets worse when I'm driving along and see a big group of birds chilling on a power line. Eep!

I was discussing this with my aunt, and we both agreed that this was unnerving. Let me just say I'm glad I saw this once the birds of prey had gone.

Thanks to some help from google and my bad memory I have another psychological thriller you might like: 'Deadline', with Brittany Murphy. I think it's a love it or hate it film, and reminds me a little bit of 'What lies beneath' and some other film that I can't remember the name of.

I have issues with movies like The Birds or many of the zombie flicks, there seems to be absolutely no reason for whatever the horror is supposed to be to be happening. Also, I have issues with stuff like a bunch of sparrows not being held out by a solid wooden door or the flappy thing in a chimney that can seal pretty tightly and is solid meta. [In general if something totally disobeys the laws of physics with no apparent supernatural intervention. If I can't put my fist through a door, a freaking crow cant either.]

I also have issues with some of the characters in movies - Jamie Lee Curtis' character in the original Halloween runs in through the kitchen past all these lovely large kitchen knives only to run upstairs to cower in a closet with an unbent coat hanger. People in a tropical/subtropical hurricane zone get *days* of warning that a killer storm is coming and they sit on the beach watching it [can't remember the name of the movie but the protagonist was a deputy sheriff going around notifying people in apartments of a hurricane, and there is some ooze or something in a bathroom taking over people? something like that, and there is a cat involved I think] There is a mysterious ooze schlorping around, why the hell are you poking it with a stick? Run way, you idiot.

Though if I get the chance, I will always watch Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing [or any combination thereof] There is nothing like the old school AI or Hammer horror films!

One movie I saw years ago that really squicked me out was an old very low budget B movie called the Incredible Melting Man... you know the sort, man gets fired up into space in a rocket, man lands after encountering something strange, strange things happen...

Ah yes, Cloverfield. It was another movie I saw, and pretty original with the "The Cameraman is a character" type filming. I still have one question about it though.. What happened to that girl that was bitten? Did she esplode? Was she killed by those agency fellows? Or did something pop out of her? I was unclear on that when they took her in the tent.
