  • Les Miz 2012 ... :D (no spoilers)

O... wow. I finally got to see one of my favorite musicals, after listening to the soundtrack for a couple of decades. squeeeeeeee

And no, I won't give you spoilers. Most you probably know what's going to happen in it anyway but if there are virgin ears out there I don't want to spoil the fun.

Everything here is just minor commentary that won't ruin anything.

    1) The rest of the audience. This alone was awesome enough to comment on. Aside from one or 2 spots where everyone chuckled they were SILENT. I mean seriously SILENT.

I'm not really surprised though. Most people who go are going specifically to hear the music. So they wouldn't be yapping etc.

    2) It's long. Don't drink too much soda. I had to duck out during the end-credits cos I had to piss like a race-horse. By the end I was getting a little "ok wrap it up" even though I loved it.

    3) Little touches from the book: they had the "elephant" statue that Gavroche & the other urchins lived in. And "take one from the back" (i'll leave it at that, somewhat in the book).

    4) O my, Enjolras just somehow looked the way I imagined him. Gavroche did too really

    5) Enunciation of lyrics: This one was kinda interesting. I've heard the musical for well over a decade now but... there's a couple of lines that just sounded clearer / easier to understand in the movie. For example the stuff about the "general" - finally made sense.

    6) And ... perhaps the most important to me really... I kept thinking "That priest looks familiar..." I didn't realize it until after his scene that it was Colm Wilkinson! - the original Jean Valjean (well for the English version at least).

It tickled me pink that they made sure to include him. (actually from the interviews I watched after I got home, it looks like he helped out a lot with it - including advice for Hugh etc.)

oh and yeah, anne made me want to cry especially.

I never saw my friend T cry openly. Just at home, but since he is Japanese, its rare to show outer emotion in an open space.

We both bawled. Over. And over.

Oh and I forgot another one

      7) Singing during the actual takes / filming. Instead of singing first and acting to match the singing, they just did them both. So it really sounded more natural, more emotional simply because... they were really singing right there.

The only other musical where I know that was done was My Fair Lady. But *only* Rex Harrison.

I gotta go see this, too. I'm glad to hear...er, read...that they did it justice. ^_^ I've been listening to this one for as long as you have, myself.

Little Bits and Z Man went to see it with some of their cast mates. From what I was told they all sang along with the movie.

I have yet to see it. I can not wait to compare it with the live stage show. It is hard to believe that it has been a year and a half since Little Bits played Eponine.

                OK, this better not happen.

Tomorrow at 3:30! My brother already bought tickets!

I can't take people singing at each other seriously...I just can't.

My wife and I got to see it on Christmas Day. I was lucky that I ordered the tickets online. By the time we got there (1 hour before showing) they were sold out...and the next showing was heading that way, too.
It was so beautiful. I had to be careful, however. I caught myself trying to sing with the actors
I have a...thing. Wanna see it?

I went to see it with Evil Empryss and the Evil Princess the other day. We all loved it.

I was familiar with the story line from Wikipedia, but had never heard the musical so that part was all new to me. However, I thought the music was very well done, and the performances were very good. Definitely worth the price of admission. The house was packed.

Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter were particularly good, though I enjoyed the performances of all the major roles.

The theater was pretty quiet through most of the film, except during "Master of the House," which got a lot of laughs, and the end when there were quite a few people openly crying (I was one of them).

EE was not happy; the girl sitting on the other side of her from the Evil Princess was singing along through the whole movie, and not doing it very well.

Oh good lord....even during musicals where I KNOW the words, I will either sing along quietly or shut up. (such as when I went and saw Avenue Q. The ONLY song I sang along to loudly was "The Internet Is For Porn" )

As far as Les Mis goes, I'm also familiar with it from Wikipedia, but I haven't actually seen it in action. I have heard a number of the songs due to them being quite decent fodder for high school music performances ("Master Of The House" and "I Dreamed a Dream" were sung in a musical performance the year before I went to that school, "At The End Of The Day" was used as a choir song when I was in Year 10 and "On My Own" was sung by another girl when I was in Year 12. I also used "Castle On A Cloud" for warmups on my flute since the range fit the flute perfectly. )

The teens that I was talking about were all members of the cast of Les Mis when it was done here the summer of 2011. They went to the movie and then went out for ice cream and discussed what they thought about the movie and the costumes.

Here is a link to their cast list http://www.tdej.org/2011_cast.php

The only musical it is ever appropriate to sing during is the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Nothing else. But there's always someone who thinks they're an undiscovered operatic star and has to share their voice with the world, as much as the world wants them to STFU.

I was really surprised EE didn't tell that girl to do that. I would have.

I managed to just mouth the words, rather than outright singing. I love Les Mis. I also should have brought Kleenex with me, lol! One of the few movies I've seen where the audience applauded at the end.
