The beads are little tubes about 5mm long and...2mm thick? They come in bags of a large number of a separate colour or tubs of lots of colours. The boards are in all sorts of shapes but are all covered in little spikes perfect to hold one bead. God help the nearest cushion though if you jolt the board and your carefully-laid pattern goes flying. Then you melt them together - my mum put greaseproof paper over them and went over them with an iron. Not sure if that's still how it's done, I haven't played with them for years
