When I had Stumps, I moved his litter box from the bathroom to the garage. I'd installed a cat door in the door leading from the kitchen to the garage just for him.

I just put him in it (it was clean), and moved his paws to "scratch the litter." I then closed the door to the bathroom after cleaning it, to make it off limits.

He got the idea quick, no accidents.

I've ever only used one catbox, even when I had two cats. I simply did not have room for more than one. Of course, my cats are usually outdoor cats, so I was able to get away with it. Plus, my current catbox is self cleaning, so it's larger than most catboxes.

I'm actually planning to redo the vanity in the guest bath to make it easier to put the litter box out of the way.

I still only have the one box for Taz. She will poop on the bath rug if her box isn't clean enough for her (she's pretty fussy), but it's not an accident, but rather a protest "Clean my box, human minion!" If Taz goes anywhere else in the house, she's sick and I take her to the vet.
They say that God only gives us what we can handle. Apparently, God thinks I'm a bad ass.

Had no issues relocating mine. Just ensured the previous area was vacuumed free of any trace litter and Febreezed to remove any scent. I actually keep mine in a closet now and use a corn based litter for no smell / spreading it around. Also super light weight so no back strain. -.-

another idea... how about putting the box in the bathroom?
i ask just cos that's where we've always put litter boxes - the cats poop where we poop!

if that's not possible - i know not all bathrooms have the room for it - you may want to consider putting some plastic down where the box use to be until kitty gets use to it.

with my last cat, i had to move the box on him once and he pretty much just took a dump right where the old box use to be. thankfully though, as i noted above, the box was in the bathroom, so he pretty much pooped on tile, not carpet.
I second the bathroom idea if feasible. The plastic, not so much...a lot of cats seem to think this means plastic = a place to pee/poo, so then every time they come across a plastic bag, it becomes a potty.

One of the reasons I bought the house I live in now is that it had one extra bedroom than we needed. This became the "kitty room." We have two litter boxes for two cats and it's working out well. It's weird...they use one box for peeing and one for pooping.
When you start at zero, everything's progress.

Sounds like the first (and so far only) time I've been camping in a remote area with camp toilets.

We ended up setting up a grand total of four "toilets". One was a long drop toilet (basically the toilet seat over a giant-ass hole), the other was a proper camp toilet (which I accidentally flooded the first day because I had no idea how to flush it properly). We were meant to use each toilet for different functions. >.>
