  • I want to Move it Move It! (game system advice)

So I have decided to use part of my tax refund to get a motion gaming system so that I can play dance games and work out games to help me get in shape. I find dancing games to be a lot of fun. So basically, I thought I'd ask some of you for advice on what I should buy. Most of my friends who are gamers don't have motion control games, so I thought maybe you would all have better insight. So I am just going to list my thoughts on all the options, and then you all can give me advice on what is the best option.

    Kinect-
[b]Positives-[b]Now from the times I have played Dance Central, I think that it's a good dancing title and the Kinect does does offer an immersive experience. While it can be annoying to control at times. It seems good. A lot of fun games it seems
Negatives- I don't own an Xbox360. So if I did get a Kinect I would have to buy it, an xbox 360, and the games. That makes it one of the more expensive options. Plus, as I already have a PS3 I would only ever use the Xbox for Kinect games.
Approximate cost for system and 1 game after taxes $520CDN

    [b]PlayStation Move[b]
Positive- I already own a PS3 so I don't need to buy a whole console.
Negatives- I have never played with a move before. Plus i have heard bad things. Also the range of games seems small. Further more, it costs the same amount for a mini Wii as it does just for the Move Bundle.
Approximate cost for system and 1 game after taxes $165CDN

    Wii Mini/ Wii
Positive- I like Wiis. There are a lot of Wii games I enjoy. Probably the least expensive option over all.
Negatives- Wii minis are not internet compatible, and I can only get a Wii Refurbished not new. No new games now that there is WiiU. Rumors from friends that due to planned obsolecense Wiis are already starting to not work.
Approximate cost for system and 1 game after taxes $165-$220CDN

    Wii U
Positives- It seems fun. Many new titles. Nintendo exclusive stuff. People tell me it's fun. Nintendoland.
Negatives- None of the bundles include wii motes, the best one only had a Wii Pro controller in addition to the gamepad. So to do motion gaming, I would have to buy Wii U wii motes. Most expensive option.
Approximate cost for system and 1 game after taxes $580CDN

Okay so those are my pros and cons form the information I have. If you could give me insight into your experiences with these things, I would really appreciate. Which option do you think is the best value in terms of cost and entertainment? I'll probably be making the purchase in the next 5 to 9 days. My first game, no matter the console, will probably be Just Dance 4, but if I get the Kinect I might get Dance Central 3 instead. Thanks in advance!

Please Read this: So I've been reading a lot of everyone's great comments, and I just want to add this. DDR is not an option. Firstly, because I live on the ninth floor of a very quiet building and stomping around would be annoying for my neighbours. Secondly, I actually really hate DDR. I played it many times when I was in High School and I never once enjoyed it. So while I appreciate the people who suggested it, I just want everyone else to know that it's not something I'm considering.

    I own a Wii and PS3.

Honestly, I'd buy a PS2 and get some early DDR games (Extreme 1 and Extreme 2) and leave it at that :P

Honestly, it kinda depends on what kind of exercise you prefer. I haven't tried the dance games on the Wii before, but I've played the Just Dance game (4 I think) on PS3.

It was god awful. Mostly for the music selection. But the playing was...weird for me as a DDR player.

I have done exercise programs on both the Wii and PS3 though. I prefer the Wii Fit program over Fit in Six, although Fit in Six lets you download more options.

So...in terms of movement, I'd go Wii, but if you're looking for game selection on top of it, that would depend on what kind of gaming you do.

Dance Dance revolution is what I'd also recommend with, until you get to be in the Heavy and above categories. At that point, the soft pads do not cut it. I'm barely able to play now...really wish I could get ahold of a Cobalt Flux.

The Just Dance series for Kinect...I have those too. Quite fun, a lot different from most stuff I've played, but it's fairly forgiving until you learn how to play.

I own a 360, PS3, and Wii, but don't have a PS Move or Kinect. I don't have the former because none of the games on offer for it interest me in the slightest, and I don't have the latter because you need a certain amount of space in front of the Kinect for it to work properly, which I just don't have.

That said, I agree with the others and suggest getting a DDR game.

Husband and I own the 360. wii and ps3. Personally I use the Wii the most out of the three. (ZELDA!!!) They have a lot of games that anyone can join in like the wii sports and they have a wii store where you can buy and download old nintendo games or a few others

The one hubs and I use the most together though is the 360. Mostly for minecraft, though we also have one of the dance central games and rockband 3.

Used to play DDR when I was a teen, some of the music is catchy. However, I prefer dancing games like Dance Central. I just can't move like I used to on a dance pad. Also, they slide around on the carpet after a heavy round.

If yo do go with DDR, DO NOT get a wireless dance pad. I've had bad experiences with one as the console wasn't picking it up so when I hit the arrow perfectly, it wouldn't read it. So frustrating.

Seraph, I love my Cobalt Flux dance pads! Unfortunately I'm in an upstairs apartment now and don't want to be stomping all over my downstairs neighbor's ceiling. I have a friend here that has a downstairs apartment and a PS2 but he might be forced out of his apartment soon. Guess I'll be hanging on to them for when we move and possibly get an actual house of our own. My husband is so sick of moving those around...they weight about 50 lbs each...

Kinect is the best of the three technology wise as it can track full body movement without a controller or remote. Especially for dancing games. Also this happened.

I'm not a big fan of the Move or Kinect (the technology's just too hit or miss for now), but you might try another option: Fitocracy.

It's like any other website, but it has a gamer sort of mentality where you "level up" based on your activities. I use it basically as a tracking device, but it's made me a lot better at keeping a consistent workout at home. Since I don't like any of the "workout" games out there, I came up with an alternative: gaming WHILE working out. I ride an exercise bike, do situps (and push ups while paused) during a game session on a game where I can just run on autopilot. I got in better shape playing Warriors Orochi 3 on my PS3 than I'd been in for years

I hope the rumour about the Wii's planned obsolescence isn't true...it better not be!

I have Wii Fit Plus and Wii Sports Resort (and all the other Wii X games too :P), and while I don't know how well they've worked I can say they have been immense fun! They're not gritty, the colours are bright and happy, the Miis are funny little buggers, and you can play with others - it's always fun to get hot and sweaty with a friend.

I personally have the PS3, although I don't use the motion sensor. It also doubles as our bluray player too.

My first thought though was "be careful of kinect" cos of the privacy concerns - according to their own site it will take photos of you while you play & make it available online. You'll have to change your settings to prevent this.

The PS3 move stuff will do that too...basically, be careful with anything that has a camera attached to it at this point.

Alright so I think I've narrowed it down between a Mini Wii and an Xbox Kinect. So of those two things, does anyone have an positives or negatives about either I should know? Online ratings for the Kinect are higher than the Wii, but I have more friends who own a Wii.

                        I'm really torn about this.

From what I've done on looking into this myself...I would go with the kinect. I'm just worried that they aren't going to have the games come out to justify the descision.

I'm as Nintendo fanboi as they come, but I'd go with the Kinect as well. The technology and the library are better. Especially if you're going to be using it as a work out. The Kinect has the best work out titles. Though the PS3 isn't too far behind. The PS3's controls are a bit more clunky though as I recall and Sony hardware always costs a fortune -.-

Eh, its an X-Box, its a PC in a box. It has the most cross platform support and a good developer base as a result. I wouldn't be worried about the library. Nintendo on the other hand always tends to have more propriety hardware that needs to be developed around. While the PS3 is a huge pain in the ass to develop for.
