I live in a house with 2-roommates; Roommate 1 is the lease holder, because we rent the home from his mother, the owner.
A few months ago Roommate 1 let a friend stay at the house while he starts school and looks for an apartment. Friend has always been very helpful around the house, etc.
Today I come home to a busted-down door and a ransacked house; apparently, the state attorney general had issued a warrant to search the house under suspicious of child exploitation (porn). The warrant was in the name of Roommate 2 because the internet is in his name (But all of us in the house use this network via secured wifi).
Apparently, they had tracked some downloads to this address and Roommate 2's account.
The description of the downloads they were looking for were....horrible. Horrible, horrible videos involving children.
Once they checked all the computers in the home and roommate 2 arrived, they confirmed that what they were looking for was on friend's computer only and so amended the warrant for friend and seized his computer.
They found the stuff on the computer pretty quickly, but the rest of the house got a pretty good shakedown; and they were not too gentle about some things.
There is some damage; I just finished spending 4-hours cleaning one room. We will need a new front door and new locks.
We will probably see our address in the paper in a news article.
I am worried about losing my job by being associated with this.
It's a complete feeling of violation to have helped this guy out and gotten screwed.
I don't know if he realized that what he was doing would affect all of use.
Luckily, the officers did not believe any of us were involved and were actually rather friendly with Roommate 2 in the end because he was very helpful.
In an amazing coincidence, friend is out of state with friends. We contacted him but he claimed complete surprise and that it's a misunderstanding. We want him out of the house within the week; orders direct from Roommate 1's mother.
I do not want myself, my roommate or my home associated with this guy.
I don't know if I should tell my job in case they find out some other way.
Also, the tearing apart of the computers destroyed several hard drives belonging to Roommate 2, containing files essential for his business.
You can't sue the police for damage done during the execution of a warrant, so we're considering suing friend; only he doesn't have any money, although his parents are well off.
We're wondering about contacting a lawyer to either get him to pay or perhaps put a lien on his car. I just don't know.
I've been a straight arrow, goody-two-shoes working security jobs all my life and now I'm embroiled with this. I don't know how we can fix things and move on and try to lessen the impact to us.
Sorry for the length, but this was a huge shock to walk home to. I'm only grateful that our dog stayed in my bedroom through all this and didn't get hurt.
