  • Well WTF ...

I am finally getting my Christmas parcels out ...

So I figured I'd send to sis first, since it has to cross an international border.

Now, last I heard, sis believed she'd had a parcel stolen off her front porch. Figured it might have been from brother. However, the allegedly stolen parcel came from FedEx; brother sent his parcel (or parcels) via Canada Post/USPS. I've heard nothing further so have no clue whether the FedEx was for a parcel that was in fact stolen, or whether it actually blew off somebody *else's* door and landed in her garden.

I thought I would require a signature at her end to prevent them just putting the parcel down and driving merrily off. Canada Post has advised me that in order to get a signature on the other end I have to send the parcel expedited. Cost: $80.

    Not in this lifetime, folks.

Sis does not report to a central office in the mornings before going to work, so I can't send it there. NOW she says she's not 100% sure any parcel was stolen at all, explaining that she found the FedEx slip in her garden and just assumed it blew off the door ... which further puzzles me, because if FedEx left a notice, they wouldn't have left a parcel ...and AFAIK any documentation that attaches to parcels is very, very firmly attached. So now I don't know WTF is going on.

Sis says she believes the incoming parcel will be fine on the porch. There is more than $200 worth of stuff in the parcel (most bought on behalf of Mom, with Mom's money) so I'm rather wary about "it should be fine on the porch."

So ... post office and take the chance? FedEx? UPS? Large slingshot?

As usual, any and all advice will be welcome ...

I'm not sure if it works the same in Canada, but in the US you can send a parcel "general delivery" to a post office and the addressee can pick it up at that office. You may want to check into that.

When Fedex leaves a note on my door, they also put the name of the addressee - me or one of my sisters - on the note. So if she found a note in her yard with no name on it, that's mighty peculiar. There should be a name and/or address on it. If there was neither, then it sounds more like either the Fedex delivery person lost a blank note, or it was laying there long enough for the elements to wash off all the ink.

Other than that, no idea...I like TheShadow's suggestion though.

Signature Confirmation doesn't have a minimum amount with USPS.

Canada Post does this anyhow without having to specify general delivery. If its too big to stuff in your mail box or safely leave near the door it stays at the closest office for pick up. Then they just mail you a notice card.

Its pretty easy to figure out if it was stolen, just have whomever sent it track it on the Fedex website and see if it was listed as delivered.

              Thanks for the suggestions, folks.

Gravekeeper and MoonCat, that's a good point about how to figure out if a parcel was stolen. Kinda puzzled that sis didn't look into it (unless the slip was unreadable -- she didn't give me much info).

Aethian, unfortunately I can't get across the border to mail it via USPS. No passport, LOL. I do have local relatives who cross the border regularly to buy groceries; maybe I should find out when they're next going over ... "Yeah, could you mail my Christmas parcel while you're over there?" Relatives:

TheSHADOW, thanks for the 'General Delivery' idea; I'll check into that.

Definitely gonna look into the drone suggestion, BookstoreEscapee ...

At this point I need to figure out where the nearest USPS office is in relation to sis's house ... also the nearest Purolater/FedEx/UPS pickup point. She will probably be annoyed enough that I didn't send it regular mail without my forcing her to drive for an hour to get it.

Just save up all the packages you would have sent Sis and give them to her when she visits. :-)
