  • Thinking out loud but opinions welcome

So I have Clear internet and it's going away. No more completely unlimited data for me. The only reason I care is because I don't watch much actual TV but instead watch a lot of youtube and stream a couple of shows (1-4 hours of CBS a month). My all-time high for data is 90 gigabytes. My lowest ever without any video was 1.5. So I am adaptable. I mean, there is netflix, the free DVDs at the library, renting videos, etc if I don't want to use data. There are some series I am thinking of buying, too.

I have thought about getting TW internet in my apt, but I'm not sure I like the idea of being married to it for a year, even though it would be cheaper if I got all my entertainment through it. I'm leaning toward Boost service for a while and maybe TW later.

Oh, and I should add that I'm ok with using my phone for much of the youtube I watch because honestly, I listen to it more than I look at it. I like to have TV shows on while I'm cooking or doing laundry, so I don't need a big screen. The speaker I use sounds the same off my phone or laptops, so no big deal.

Other options I can get from my current company:

--Current phone plan + mobile hotspot=phone service and 14 gigs $85 a month
--Above + add another 10 gigs of hotspot data for additional $50--phone service and 24 gigs for $135 a month
--Unlimited phone plan for $60 (though I know they will throttle me) + $50, 10 gig hotspot="unlimited" for $110

I do think there is a way to buy smaller extra amounts of data for my phone, but for the hotspot if you are on the $50 plan you just pay another $50. Not sure.

I don't want to root my phone for various reasons.

I wouldn't want to go with just internet on my phone because I like using my chromebook and the use-your-phone-as-hotspot plans are stupid: too little data sharing for the money. So I really do want a phone plan + a separate internet plan.

If you can make sense of all this you win a cookie.

I just ended up with Xfinity after Clear went tits-up; actually the installers just left (they showed up right on time and everything!). They're the only other ISP that services my apartment, apparently. I do like that they have WiFi hotspots all over town it seems; I've been using them for about a week. I researched getting internet through the cell provider but it was more economical to go with Xfinity (and also the cell phone service is in the control of soon-to-be-ex-husband, so that would be a whole sticky matter as well). Yeah it's a year commitment which I don't love but it's more economical so I'm sucking it up and dealing with it.
