The one I found was actually an Asus Vivotab, refurbished ones go for a pretty decent price and it's exactly what I'm looking for. My only issue now is finding a case for it that doesn't have magnets in it, because Amazon reviews reveal that magnets screw with the pen and that's the part I need most. Of course, there are well-priced cases that include keyboards, and I would love to get one, if not for those magnets.

I haven't actually bought it yet (won't be able to until next month) so I'm still open to suggestions, though.

If a pen is your thing than yes, the Vivotab is nice with the Wacom stylus. Had a Wacom Cintinq for years. Can't go wrong with them when it comes to anything stylus or tablet related.

They should come with their own sleeve case like any laptop/netbook. Unless you needed something more robust?

I'm taking my first on-campus class this semester, and the computers there are either old and slow or equipped with Windows 10 and I really don't like 10. I want my own device to take to class for notes and I could take my laptop but I'd like something smaller and easier to carry around. I'm considering a cheap tablet but those are mostly for internet purposes and I don't know if it's possible to get Microsoft Word on there (or OneNote, it might be better for this particular class). I don't need a lot of storage space, since my notes will likely go straight to my laptop when I get home.

Can anyone recommend a device that might work for me?
Funny you should ask (actually i saw this when you originally posted), i'm trying to solve the same problem. I do editing for an author at storiesonline.net (NSFW) who uses ODT files. I want the ability to do this work on my Android phone at times. Hardware really isn't the problem, any phone or tablet will do it, just pair it up with a keyboard (usually Bluetooth, but wired are also possible in some devices). Software is though, readers are common, but editors are rare, and editors that show your changes are even rarer. At best i've been able to make changes, but not in any way that's distinguished from the rest of the test, unlike the desktop version which makes a mark in the left margin, and strikes out the old text while re-colouring it and the new work.

So, there's my issue, but what's the solution? Well, as of this morn it looks like WPS office will do it. I need to do more testing, and it'll likely require working from DOC files (easy to convert), but confindence is high. I might even pick up a cheap tablet (sub $100 for a 9in) from everbuying.com to make it easier.

I have a 1 1/2 year old so yeah, I really do. She wants to be like Mommy and that means she wants to go through my textbooks and pretend to type on my laptop. I don't really have anywhere to go to do work where she can't get to me so I'm just trying to protect it when she does get her hands on it.

Ahhh, okay. It does look like there's a number of hard leather case/sleeves available for it on Amazon for relatively cheap ( $15-20 range ) if you need something sturdier than the one it comes with.

My eeePC just had a cloth case and it trundled back and forth to work in my backpack for 2 hours a day on buses, Skytrains and on foot. Still works perfectly fine even now and now it lives in a junk drawer in the bedroom.
