  • Getting used to driving again.

Long story short, I haven't been behind the wheel of a car in almost three years. My dad just offered to sell me his car since he wants a new one. I figure driving from Oklahoma to Texas would be a good way to get used to driving again and Dad is going to take me out to a parking lot tomorrow and let me get the feel of the car.

My question is, how do I get over the fear? I've never been a real confident driver but I need to get over that. So, any advice on not being so nervous behind the wheel?

I think the parking lot thing is a good idea. Once you get back in there, you'll likely re-acclimate yourself pretty quickly.

As someone who has never liked driving, even after over a decade, I'd recommend leaving early for any appointments. Greatly reduces stress. Also, I looove Google Streets! Presto, you can see what lane you need to be in, what the traffic lights look like (do I get a green arrow, or a solid green?), what streets are one-way, etc.

But in the end, you just have to drive a bunch and know that other drivers are terrible. Even after three years of not driving you're probably still better than they are, just by not driving while distracted.

I'll have to check Google Streets out. Honestly, my husband will be driving the car more than I will. I just have to get it from Oklahoma to Texas. I leave for Montana the end of next month and I might not be back until next Fall, depending on when the Alaska job starts. At least I'll have some recent driving experience if I decide to get a beater while I'm in Alaska. Not sure I'm ready to brave winter driving in Montana yet.

Well, I did it. I drove around the parking lot a bit and then decided to just take the plunge and get out there. It went much better than I thought it would. The nerves hit after I got back to the house. Guess I get delayed panic attacks. Anyways, I'm going to drive the car again tomorrow, but I feel more confident about driving to Texas than I did.
