Got home from work tonight to a FB DM from my sister: would I like to travel out West to celebrate my birthday (occurs in the fall) with them (sis and brother live in the same Prairie city)? They will pay my way and one of them will even fly with me if I want. I can stay with either of them (both of them have houses).
I find myself having very mixed feelings about this. I prefer, for various reasons which I won't bore you with, to remain at arm's distance from my brother. I have no similar reasons to wish to do the same for my sister but ... I just like the distance relationship.
I also like my solitude. Neither of them is like one particular aunt of mine, who always sounds as if she was recorded at 33 and is being played at 78 and NEVER SHUTS UP ... EVER. But I just prefer being in my own little place with my computer, my books and my two cats. I get what social interaction I enjoy at my job and when I go to local cafes for coffee and a snack.
I haven't responded yet, obviously, because I definitely didn't see this coming and don't really know what to say. "Thanks but I really prefer you two half a country away" just sounds a bit ... TOO ... direct.
FWIW, I'm not particularly fearful of flying, nor of getting lost somewhere in freakin' Toronto International Airport. ("Hi, guys, sorry but I won't be joining you for the celebrations; I seem to have somehow ended up in Madrid ....")
What's really ironic is that I *always* book the week of my birthday off work, and this year is no different.
All comments/suggestions/scoffing welcome.
