    Anime Con adventures - Need costume ideas.

    Well, D has decided that she wants to go to Nan Desu Kan, and I figured that I would go with, having never been to an anime convention. I think it'll be either fun, or scary (I've seen pictures!)

    At any rate, she's trying to figure out what kind of costume to wear, and I suppose I should find one myself.

    My thing is, I want one that will be appropriate to my body-style. That is, somewhat bulky (I'm 225lbs and have a beer belly (and I don't drink beer!)). So no little kid-type characters, but rather an adult male with a somewhat hefty body (not necessarily a fat character, just someone on the bulky side).

    My first thought was Jet Black from Cowboy Bebop. I think I could between now and September, make the appropriate metal-ish bits for his arm and legs(?). It's been a while since I sat and watched the series, so I'll have to do so and get some good screenshots.

    Any other ideas that might prove interesting and not too difficult?

    There's several con goers that go as Jet in a spiffy tan suit and cigarette. How one guy did the cigarette was to put a little LED light into a small tube. I think he took one of those thin pencil lights and painted it or something. He carried a plushy dog that wore a collar reading "EIN" on it. It was great.

    The nice thing about NDK (I have friends that go every year) is you don't have to be dressing up as a strickly anime character. My friends are furries and they go dressed as... well... furries. Just pick a charactor from a popular TV show or movie.

    Fry from Futurama?

    Rotti Largo from Repo! The Genetic Opera?

    Chouji from Naruto?

    Wario or Mario would be cool.

    Oogie Boogie from Nightmare Before Christmas?

    Honestly, the guest is more along the lines of how big are you? You say you have a beer belly, well, so does DataJager (he's always been heavy, including being a fat little boi) but he is actually the correct weight for his size. Are you fat or merely overweight? Being anywhere between 20 and 80 lbs overweight could be noticeable or not and there's a good chance you can still cosplay as a "thin" charactor. There are some charactors that look better with a little more meat on their bones.

      As to my size, my measuring tape says my gut is 46" at it's largest point. I would dearly love to loss 25 pounds this summer....

      Mario might be cool to do.. I don't know the others well. Never liked Simpsons, and Futurama seemed to be more of the same so I never watched it.

      Chouji could work. I'd probably only need to actually make the underpants head protector, unless I tried to do the older version (I haven't watch Naruto since about ep 130 or so). The rest I could probably find (I often get great costume stuff at the Good Will type shops).

      Plus, I agree with you on the "little more meat" comment. I've thought that about a large number of stars...

      Edit to say: While some people can do absolutely wonderful costumes for themselves or others, I'm not one of them. Given time, I can come up with good ones, but no where near as cool as some I've seen.

        Dude, that is a killer cosplay costume.

        You're the same size as DataJager. Honey, you're not fat.

        You would make a great GhostBusters character though. <3 And you don't even need the plasma packs either!

          If you do Jet, you must post pictures! I love that guy.

          There's Jiraiya from Naruto, too, or Captain Avatar from Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers. You can also do general characters like a crew member from Yamato or Gundam or Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Macross or whatever. Just need the uniform, you don't have to be anyone in particular that way.

          There's Pippin from Berserk (if you don't mind showing off your chest)

          I'll talk to Husband, he will probably have more ideas than me.

            Well, "fat" is subjective. I don't consider myself fat, just overweight (and seriously out of shape). I talked with D this morning before going to sleep, and she likes the Mario ideal. It would certainly be the simplest one.

            I don't want to do Ghostbusters.

              D could dress up as a character from one of the Mario games as well. Toad or Toadette, one of the princesses, heck she could be of the witch characters from Paper Mario. Ya know, the purple... ghost... things...
