I've never tried Greek yogurt, but from what I'm reading about it, it sounds like I might like it better than plain yogurt. I buy Stonyfield Farms brand...they're all natural, organic, and don't add aspertame or other artificial sweeteners to their products. Brands like Dannon and Yoplait might have yogurts with less calories or sugar per serving, but I'd rather have more calories/sugar and not put the artificial stuff in my body. Anyway, Stonyfield Farms has a Greek yogurt called Oikos which has no fat, slightly less calories and more protein per serving than their lowfat regular yogurt, which is what I'm eating now. And, I think Greek yogurt is supposed to be thicker. I have a big carton of lowfat vanilla regular yogurt in the fridge now, and there's always some liquid floating on top of the yogurt when I open it, which is a little off-putting. It tastes fine but looks weird. I think Greek yogurt already has all the liquid strained off so I'm guessing that the separation thing won't happen.

Yes, Greek yogurt is thicker (like regular yogurt with the liquid skimmed off). Also, it's the only kind you should use to make tzaziki sauce.

Greek yogurt has more protein than regular (because it has less liquid). Most of the liquid is strained off, making it thicker. I read somewhere that it has less calcium, though (because some of it gets strained off with the liquid).

I usually get Fage brand (the tub of plain) and mix in fruit or chocolate syrup. I also like their single-serve cherry or peach. (I don't recommend honey...cold honey is not so appetizing..). Oikos is good, too...I've had the plain and vanilla (which come with recipes on the foil cover), and the chocolate (which comes in a four-pack of small cups). I just bought caramel last night, but I haven't tried it yet.

Re: Stoneyfield Farms regular yogurt - I love the Chocolate Underground... My mom got me the Eat This Not That supermarket guide and the section on yogurt says that of all the brands/flavors they looked at, the Chocolate Underground had more sugar than any of them. The Oikos chocolate has a bit less sugar than that (I eat it as dessert, though).

Greek Yogurt is strained through a cloth or paper bag to remove the whey (the liquidey stuff in dairy.)

It makes it thicker, and a little more sour, it also has slightly less than double the fat content than normal yogurt, and spoils less at higher temperatures.

... The fact I can list that off the top of my head is proof I watch WAY too much food network...

Greek yogurt can also be substituted for sour cream in most cases.

We're going to call you Sheldon the 2nd. I love greek yogurt: more protein, creamier texture, ability to sub for sour cream. I tried straining regular yogurt in order to save money, but it didn't taste the same. It must use a slightly different culture.
