  • anyone sell jewelry at a pawn shop?

I got this rather ugly pearl ring for my bday, and I can only get store credit (my mom said it was okay to return it....it was a spur of the moment gift)

Since I could use the cash, I was thinking a pawn shop. I tried at one already, and I am pretty sure they were full of BS....they said it was costume (the original tag said White Gold, and at the original price, if it is fake, then Kohls is lying ). So I will try again.

Anyone have any luck with pawn shops? I know how much I'd like for it, and of course it'd be great if I was able to get more.

(yes, I know, it seems evil of me to pawn a bday gift, but I will really never wear it, I hate pearls, and it will just end up getting lost somewhere. I was thinking of getting the credit and giving it to my mother...but somehow that seems even worse. We suck at gifts in my family.)

I don't know much about pawn shops, but I do know that they only pay 'scrap gold' prices on jewelry, which tends to be a small fraction of the original price. And the few I've seen didn't take any gems into consideration for what they offered. If you're willing to wait just a bit to get money out of the ring, you might try selling it on ebay or craigslist or put an ad in your local paper. You'll probably get more out of it that way.

If you do want to go the pawn shop route, do a little research on line, find the pawnshops in your area and (best case) start with ones that are part of a national or local chain or find one in or near an upscale neighborhood. Sounds like that one place you went was probably going to try seriously to lowball you. He made you an offer after saying it was costume, right?

As for the ring itself, there should be a stamp somewhere on the inside of the band for whatever type of gold it is, if it's actually gold. If there isn't a stamp on it, and Kohl's advertised it as being gold, you might look at looking for a refund based on the ring not being as advertised, just don't get sucky about it.

Really, if you can return it for store credit, that's by far the best way to get as much as possible. Surely there's *something* you need that they sell?
Now the trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed.

Sadly, no....I usually end up with a few store credit cards/gift cards and it really rare I find anything there....I don't *need* $$$ in underwear

There are pawn shops that deal mainly in jewelry and those are really the only ones that you would want to consider as they do function more as cash only shops than true pawn shops, you may not get the best price but you should get a good one. You could also take it to a jewelry store as most of them (at least the larger chains) both sell and purchase, I did that with a few items from an ex at Zales and got a very fair price.

As someone else mentioned there should be a stamp on the inside of the ring indicating the karat (14K or whatever it is) if it is gold (there would also be a stamp indicating if it is a different precious metal, 925 I think is sterling silver but I don't know any others). If you don't see the proper stamp then take it back to Kohls and make them aware of it.

The other thing you might do is return the ring for store credit, then sell the credit for 70 or 80 cents on the dollar, that might get you a better price than at a pawn shop.

There is some sort of stamp, but I cannot make out any # on it. Just dots...like the rest of the inner band.

              Interesting.....

Anyone wanna buy a pearl ring?

Regarding pawn shops in general: Great place to buy--sucky place to sell.

I got a great deal on a pearl necklace for Mrs. TGK. The asst. manager made the deal even better since I did her taxes.
I'm trying to see things from your point of view, but I can't get my head that far up my keister!

"white gold" band (in quotes because of the shop I took it to) 6 small accent diamonds (3 on each side) and big ol' white pearl in the center
