There's a book by Michael Pollan called Food Rules, which has one that I like: [paraphrased] Eat all the junk food you want as long as you make it yourself. If you have to make those french fries from scratch...are you really gonna do that very often?

I've heard that people confuse hunger for thirst so drink a glass of water before getting any snacks and see if that satisfies you. Also before you go out to a party make sure you eat a filling healthy snack so that when you do hit the goody table you'll be less likely to over eat. It's not that I'm lazy, it's that I just don't care. -Office space

Society is not helping with this ....for example at Walgreens I went looking for the sugar free/calorie free flavor packets that you flavor bottles of water with...so I will drink more water with no calories and keep hydrated....and they are SEASONAL so they no longer have them out. But soda is everywhere I look. WTF? This is a drugstore for god's sake....they should know better. And right here at work they are serving free donuts/pastries/hot chocolate etc...none of which I can have. Where are the goddamn healthy snacks and drinks I ask you......https://www.youtube.com/user/HedgeTV

This is such a good idea............like if I want a slice of cake I will have to assemble the ingrediants and bake the cake............gives you time to think better of having it.Quoth BookstoreEscapee View PostThere's a book by Michael Pollan called Food Rules, which has one that I like: [paraphrased] Eat all the junk food you want as long as you make it yourself. I did well over the holidays and did not eat as much bad stuff as I was dreading.
Now to continue over the course of this next year and see exactly how much of a difference it will make, I have high hopes for my health.
All my shopping lists are so different to what they were before.Mostly fruit and vegetables, very little ready made food on there. No choclates or cookies or candies. If I want something sweet i have yoghurt with some pureed fruit now.Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

As I drink water better when it has ice cubes in it i have made a really concerted effort to always have ice cubes in the freezer.I have noticed that if I have no ice cubes I tend to go to the corner shop and get some icecold coke from the chiller. So I have to stop that.Quoth ArcticChicken View PostI've found that just carrying a water bottle massively increases the amount of water I drink.
I might squeeze a little fresh lime or lemon or orange juice into the water to give it some healthy flavour.

yeah-- having something to idly suck on (out of the gutter! out!
) is really good for my water consumption; not to mention doing without soda and super-sweet-possibly-not-even-sucrose stuff really reset my taste buds towards that stuff.
it's a good thing.
I'm happy to see you're becoming aware of your food habits, and consciously directing yourself towards better ones. That's been a thing for me-- noticing what I do, before I do it, and then stopping myself.
Also, I simply must try that 'citrus in water' thing-- I drink a lot of tea, for the taste, and the taste of tea specifically."Is it the lie that keeps you sane? Is this the lie that keeps you sane? What is it?Can it be?Ought it to exist?"

Hello! Happy New Year! Long time no talk!
Yes that's exactly what it is, learning not to just reach for the first drink or snack available when you want one.
As for the citrus in water some people swear by hot water with lemon first thing in the morning its not something I have tried reularly and i guess it is a matter of getting used to it but i might try again soon.
I have also done this which is nice but takes some preparation - first thing in the morning put a jug of water in the fridge then also put in it slices of orange, lemon, lime, cherry, and any other fruit you like leave it all day and the next day the water will taste lovely and fruity.Last edited by TelephoneAngel; 01-16-2011, 11:58 AM.Customer "why did you answer the phone if you can't help me?"

Yeah, it has been a while since I've posted around this parts...
I tried hot water+ lemon before-- it was gross. I think it's because I associate it with cold or cool water, back before I stopped using the lemons at restaurants to flavor, but to eat. Yeah... I eat the restaurant lemons..."Is it the lie that keeps you sane? Is this the lie that keeps you sane? What is it?Can it be?Ought it to exist?"

I up my water consumption by using no sugar/no calorie flavor packets...either the on the go ones or ones that make half a gallon of water in a jug. Makes it taste better.https://www.youtube.com/user/HedgeTV

Just a note on no-sugar drinks: If one is craving calories, one will end up drinking way too much of fake-sweetened drinks, which can do more damage than just drinking the sugared originals.
So, if you're craving a sugary drink, there's a chance your body wants the sugar, not the fluid, and the craving won't go away with a low- or no-calorie alternative.

Yeah, the food vs sugar vs calories thing is a biggie for me-- I love tea, and tea usually means sugar-- and part of what led to me discovering a bunch of stuff (least of which was hypoglycemia= crazy for me) was that I didn't realize I was drinking sugary tea when I should have been eating over the summer. Heat suppresses my appetite, so I was eating less than 1k calories a day
which led to my body bitchslapping me with Crzy.
But it's better now!
