  • new diet advice needed

well, I am having to go on a pretty strict diet, after almost being knocked off with pancreatitis a couple of months ago, then having my gallbladder removed last month (with a myriad of complications).

So my diet now forbids any deep fried, alcohol, soft drinks, coffee, chocolate....and I have to keep red meat to a minimum.

Also as my pancreas and liver are not functioning properly still, my blood-sugar crashes every so often.

The doctor says I should go on a diabetic diet - does anyone have any recipes and such that they would recommend to help me get better?

A diabetic diet would be something low carb.

Personally, I would recommend the maintenence level of Atkins, and I recommend you read the books instead of getting tips from people on how to do it. Mainly because the books will explain how your body metabolizes the food you eat and if you understand this, you can make your own decisions on what type of foods would be best for you and your situation.

well if strict diabetic works, one touch gold has a menu planning website that is good.

Any really good atkins cookbooks seems like it should work, but unfortunately those frequently are careless about the overwhelming fat content of foods ...
      *however*
Ask your insurance company for a consult to a nutritionist with experience in your needs. They do it for diabetics, they should be willing to do it for you as well.

Another vote for Atkins or a similar low-carb diet regimen. I'm going to pm you the name of my favorite low-carb message board - it has tons of different LC diet plans, recipes, menus and support.

Thank you everyone for their responses - I have an appointment when I go back to hospital with a nutritionist. In the mean time I am losing weight gradually - down from 136kg (304 lbs) to 126kg (277lbs).

Aethian, I would love a copy of the books you described!

Nothing careless about it. You cannot do low carb while you are doing low fat. You will likely make yourself sick doing that.

Which is one reason people blame "Atkins" for "getting sick while on the diet." Because they don't educate themselves on how to do it correctly and do all sorts of dangerous unhealthy crap that Atkins would never suggest they do. Then they turn around and say "Atkins made them sick."

But yeah. It's no accident the fat content is higher than normally recommended. There's a reason for it. Rejoice! You can eat butter!

The problem, RK, is that high fat isn't good post-gallbladder removal. Trust me, I know. Now, IANAD, but with all of those issues combined I would highly recommend going to a nutritionist/dietitian.

Agreed. In this particular instance, with both pancreatic and gall bladder problems, I would say a nutritionist is not just recommended, but essential.

                  3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.

It depends on the individual. I'm post-gallbladder and have no issues with the high-fat content of Atkins. In fact my gastro issues go away when I'm eating LC and come back when I start going off plan. Everybody's different - you have to experiment and find out what works for you and your body type. Just like some people thrive on vegan/vegetarian, and others feel totally miserable on it.

All I know is that for about a year after my surgery (and to a lesser degree still today), if I eat a lot of fat, I need to be close to a restroom or have Immodium on hand.
