  • Long-Distane Travel With A Wild Hobbit

So, we're going to Florida next week to stay with the Husband's family at the Brother-in-law's timeshare. I am looking forward to a week away from the hellish cold and constant snow we get here. I am not looking forward to an 11-hour drive with a very active toddler.

Here is my game plan for the trip. Anyone who's done this with a toddler, could you look and tell me if it seems OK? Or if you have any other tips, please let me know!

    * We will stop every 2 hours to let Khan out someplace he can run around for 15-20 minutes. We'll stop more often if we need to. I know it will add at least 2 hours to the trip, but I'd rather have a pleasant 13-hour drive than a miserable 11-hour drive. If it gets too late, I will also insist on stopping somewhere for the night, though I really would rather not.

    * At home we follow a pretty rigid schedule, so I plan to keep to this schedule as best I can all week and even while traveling, like we have lunch at a certain time, take a nap at a certain time etc. I think my insistence on adhering to a schedule is part of why Khan is so easygoing and happy. When we stop for lunch I will insist on a fast food joint with a play area so he can run around. I usually try to avoid fast food but letting Khan get his wiggles out is more important than my waist.

    * I bought a few little toys and hid them in my car, stuff with lots of buttons to push. I figure whipping out one of these babies every few hours will give him something new to play with and might hold his attention longer than his old toys. Same with books and CDs.

    * One of us will sit in the back with him unless he is sleeping, to read to him or play with him. Mother-in-law is going to switch cars a couple times and help us keep him occupied, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

Anything else I can do? I know I sound like an unyielding bitch but my first priority is Khan, no matter where we are.

Sounds good! We've done a similar length trip with an 18 month old Jazzy and found that she slept for most of the way. Luckily she still slept through the night after a good run around when we arrived. The toy that kept her most amused during the trip was a Magnadoodle. It rested neatly across her carseat, she got to draw for ages without us having to carry loads of paper and losing pencils, and she thought that clearing the board was hilarious.

I don't have kids, but that sounds about as best of a gameplan as you could manage, especially if this is your first long trip with him. I remember long trips with my parents when I was a kid (not as young as Khan, but I was probably around 8 or so when we drove from Wisconsin to Washington DC...that was a hellish trip) and they weren't nearly as organized as you sound.

Regarding lunch, could you pack your own and then stop at a rest stop or park that has benches/tables so you can eat and Khan can run around for a while? Just a suggestion if you don't like fast food.

One more thing...do you know if Khan gets motion sickness? Even if he's never shown signs of it before, he might on a really long trip. I had horrible, horrible motion sickness as a child. I sort of grew out of it for a while but in the last year, it's come back. I CAN'T sit in the back seat of a car, or I will throw up. I can't read or concentrate on anything visual (video games, books, maps, etc.) or I get seriously nauseated and headachey. I don't really have a remedy for it, other than sitting in the front and staring out the front window, and not looking at anything else. Ginger is supposed to help with upset stomachs though, and dramamine is designed to help with motion sickness, though I dunno if they make a toddler version of it.

Plan sounds good but just to let you know Mom would have things set up like that and for one 700 mile trip...I ribbited.

Take some washcloths with you and a jar with soapy water, never know when your going to need to clean a face or wash some hands.

I would suggest NOT doing fast food. Try for a family eatery. If junk food isn't on the schedule at home then it shouldn't be on the road. At least with the eatery you'll have better luck at keeping the sugar consumption down.

I also read your blog! You really made me laugh! I plan to continue reading it, it is very funny and you write so well!! Have you written any books? If not, you should, your writing kind of reminds me of Erma Bombeck's style of writing.

Honestly, at least at the beginning of the trip, I'd give him some anti-motion sickness meds, knock him out....and *drive.* Get some mileage behind you before you have to stop every few hours for food/potty breaks.

I might see if there's any kiddie sleepy medicine out there, but I'm kind of paranoid about drugging my kid up. Maybe I'll keep some on hand if it gets unbearable though. I am hoping he will sleep at least 2 hours at his regular naptime and if we drive past his bedtime maybe he will sleep then too.

I haven't thought about motion sickness; he's never shown any signs before but we've never driven nearly as far either.

Thanks for reading the blog guys...maybe you noticed I haven't updated since October. Been kind of busy, but is people actually like it, maybe I'll see about getting back to it sometime soon.

I read a bit of your blog tonight and it was hilarious!

I would definitely keep some kind of motion sickness medicine on hand, just in case. Maybe talk to Khan's primary doctor about it and see if s/he has any recommendations. At my last visit with my doc, I asked about motion sickness and she said that if we were planning on taking any long trips, to call her and she'd write me a script for some kind of patch to put behind my ear to help prevent sickness. Maybe Khan's doc can recommend something, just in case.

The best $65 I ever spent was on a portable dvd player for the small fry. I downloaded a bunch of Super Why and Sid the Science Kid episodes and put them on dvds... I didn't hear a peep from him the entire 4.5 hour drive to Chicago, unless it was to ask for a different dvd or a book.

He's 4 though, so that might not work for you.

Thanks everyone, I will have Benedryl as an absolute last resort. I don't like drugging my kid but if it gets that bad...

I am kind of anti-DVD player in the car, and his attention span for TV isn't very long yet- maybe 15 minutes (although he will watch Super Why for the whole 1/2 hour). I just feel like I never watched TV in the car, why should he get to? And I want him to learn to entertain himself. Although I might feel differently after the drive...I can see myself running into a Best Buy in Florida, frantic. I have my laptop, I suppose I could find some videos to download, but with that he'll want to mash all the keys. Maybe I'll set it in Safe Mode and just let him mash keys for 11 hours.

He usually wakes up at 5 and goes back to sleep, so I think we're going to try getting him in his car seat when he wakes at 5 and hope he falls asleep again for a couple hours.

Does anyone know if Play-doh would be OK in the car? He's never used it before and it might keep him busy for a bit.

This will be a learning experience for sure.

Sounds like you have a good plan so far.

Not sure you want to do Play-Doh in the car. Can be a little difficult to get out of fabric.

I agree with your opinion on the DVD. If you do want to do the DVD, look at getting a monitor that attaches to the back of the car seat. It will let you keep the laptop out of reach.

Keep a stock of his favorite music to play.

Brush up on the road trip games.
I was trying to remember some of the road trip games and came across this:
