  • Is this worth complaining about?

I went grocery shopping over the weekend, and decided to pick up a chunk of tenderloin to have for dinner one night this week. We don't eat a lot of steak, but once every few months I'll pick up a tenderloin or some ribeye as a treat for us. They didn't have any pre-cut in the meat department (which is pretty normal from what I've been able to tell, every time I look for it I've always had to ask), so I asked the butcher for about a pound of tenderloin. What he gave me was actually 1.4lbs, but whatever, that's fine, it's still pretty good as leftovers.

When I first got it (it was wrapped in plastic on a Styrofoam try, so I could only see the top of it) it looked okay, there was a bit of fat marbling through it but nothing appeared extensive. Well, I unwrapped it tonight and was getting ready to cut it into serving size pieces, only to realize that the entire bottom of the meat was thick, pure fat. I ended up cutting over a third of the total mass off. To be exact, I had about 7oz of fat, and 13oz of meat (yes, I weighed it. I also realized that 20oz does not equal 1.4lbs (which is closer to 22oz) but I figured the difference could just be moisture lost while sitting in the fridge for a few days.)

I've never gotten a piece of tenderloin this fatty. Heck, the last time we got tenderloin, there was almost no fat on it. But this...was pretty disgusting. Even the "marbling" I saw from the top turned out to be a pretty thick vein of fat that I ended up cutting out when I portioned the meat out.

Considering that I paid over $18 for the whole thing (at $12.99/lb) and that over a third of it was inedible, I'm rather annoyed. However, I'm also not about to keep the meat as evidence; I need the good parts for dinner tonight, since I don't really have anything else prepared, and I don't want to keep the fat sitting around in my fridge. And I don't want to turn into an SC over something that's not worth it. So, is it worth a call to the grocery store, or should I just drop it?

Personally I would myself, but I like meat, and I don't like having to pay for fat.

Which is what you did. Ya said it yoruself, it's a treat to get it. As of now, it's as it you went to the ice cream store with your parents, when you were a kid, and they got you an ice cream cone.

Just the cone mind you, not the ice cream. You expected the ice cream, you paid for the ice cream, but ya didn't get the ice cream.

At least let the store know, even if you aren't looking for the money back they should know that their butchers need to be better trained so that this doesn't happen in the future.

Maybe save the fat and the package and take it back to show them. Ask for 7oz of meat to replace the fat.

My mom got a roast like that once. She kept the fat she cut off in a plastic bag and took it back to the store with the receipt. They gave her a refund for that portion. 7oz at 13 bucks a pound? Unless it's really out of your way, I'd take it back. At least call and tell them about it; see what they'll do for you.
