Dunno if it helps, but Lil'Zel ditched his pacifier when he was 3½.

The secret? Well, one night at bedtime, Mr. Zel sat down and quietly told Lil'Zel what pacifiers are substitutes for... whereafter Lil'Zel promptly spat the pacifier out and handed it over. He has never asked for the pacifier since

Another theory states that this has already happened.

PaciBear sounds totally clever and cute! Unfortunately, Khan has zero interest in stuffed animals (and Build-a-Bear tends to be pretty expensive, I think). If there was like, a PaciTruck...

Tomorrow is D-Day, I plan to run him like crazy so he'll be completely worn out at bedtime. Husband can't stand to hear him cry so I guess he'll be sleeping in the basement.

Khan wants to be big so badly, I am really hitting on that angle. Only babies use pacifiers, after all.

PaciTruck could work as well, now I think of it. Could it be an idea to buy a truck, ask the toy store to put it behind the counter and then make Khan go to the toy store and get the truck in exchange for the pacifier? (Of course, that requires that the toy store staff agree to that stunt)

My daughter's friend told her little girl that the trashman needed her paci because his baby did not have one. My oldest left her paci out for Santa to take to a little baby that needed it. My youngest left hers out for the Easter Bunny

We did the build a bear for #2 and it worked pretty well. He was 2 1/2 or 3. It was about $25 for a 16" (I think) frog. They do have smaller ones too and I've seen $10 off coupons a lot.

For #1 he was 15/16 months old, we did it a couple months before #2 arrived. And we just cut the tip off and gave it to him. He took one suck and handed it back and just said 'it broken' with a sad little face. Then when he asked for it we just told him it was broken and he went on his merry way.

              Good luck!

I never had a pacifier/dummy, my parents didn't like them. So me and my sister sucked our middle two fingers instead. I still do very occasionally when very stressed.

The only thing that stopped me from doing that regularly...I stopped biting my nails and found that it hurt when I sucked my fingers with nails.

At the Build-a-Bear we went to, most of the standard-size bear bodies were $18. Clothes are extra obviously, but we didn't bother with those. The $25 bodies were all the specialty ones, which at the time (December) meant the Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer specialty dolls, one or two other Christmas/winter-themed ones, and anything else with a voice box already in it (instead of added later, which was another raise-the-price option). We figured that for a substitute for the pacifier, $18 was worth it.

Khan wants to be a big boy? Then hells yeah use that! That's probably your 'in'.

Stage One has gone off without a hitch. I took him to the aquarium, to the bookstore and spent most of the day outside, didn't try to make him take a nap and then let him stay up 30 minutes past his bedtime. That kid was running on fumes. He resisted going to bed but was out as soon as I started to rock him. He's asleep now but his lips are puckered. It's so sad but cute. If he wakes up tonight we'll just go in and let him see we're here, then let him cry.

Hooray for it working so far, and good luck continuing it!

I think we ended up doing that when I weaned both girls off their naptime nursings. I just kept them up a bit later than usual and tried to wear them out before doing the naptime routine, and things worked out well. It's a good approach.

... Let's just hope he doesn't wake up fussy. Yay Stage 1! It sounds like a fun day, too.

To help with tongue thrust, I went to an awesome old-man speech therapist, . :3
Oh, yeah, I got to do the speech therapy thing, too, at school. Second grade, I think. I had trouble with the letter L.

Oh sorry! I thought no one would be that interested

Khan has been paci-free for more than a week. It went incredibly smoothly, no crying jags, nothing. In fact, he seems to sleep better without it. This past weekend we went to visit family in another state and there was no problem. I'm so proud of him. Now if I can just get him to use a different sippy cup...
