  • How do I ask?

How do I ask my grandfather if I could stay with him for a few weeks? I'm saving up my money to go visit him, but I'm afraid of asking him. The worst he could say is no, but I haven't seen him since '06. I don't know how much longer he's going to be around(he has prostate cancer), and I'd like to build a good relationship with him. I rarely ever get to see him. The time I saw him prior to '06 was in '02, and before that '99. I recently told him that I had schizophrenia. He told my aunt and uncle, and my uncle's partner. They're all taking it in slowly. I'm thinking about moving back to Massachusetts out of Missouri. I hate Missouri.

"Granddad, I know we haven't seen each other much since I grew up, but I'd really like to get to know you. Would it be possible for me to come and stay a while?"

Then you get a 'yes' or 'no' to the general idea, and negotiate how long 'a while' is.
    Seshat's self-help guide:
    1. Would you rather be right, or get the result you want?
    2. If you're consistently getting results you don't want, change what you do.
    3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
    4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

I agree with Seshat. I bet he would like to spend time with you, too. Just ask....

I was very close to my grandpa, who I called "Pop". We went everywhere together. He passed away when I was 14, on a Sunday. (5 days before Christmas) The week before, I stayed the whole weekend with him. The last thing we did together was play Jenga, and as usual, he won.

      I miss him so much.
