  • Tutoring services

I am thinking of starting a tutoring service for primary school-aged students in my area. This may also extend to babysitting.

So far my lineup seems to be as follows:

-$5 per 15 minutes (maximum would be $20 for 1 hour)
    -One-on-one tutoring.
-Meeting at students houses unless there is a need for them to meet in a public place (i.e. student is struggling with PE and needs a place to run)
-Covering all major areas of the curriculum apart from the LOTE program that nearly all schools run. (I only know French and a little bit of Japanese)
-Extra service in music theory as well.

Am I missing anything? You don't need to have teaching qualifications to be a tutor, just as long as you know the area you are going to teach. (the only issue I have with maths is long division....)

I would be getting my first aid certificate. For those in Australia, is it possible to do a police check without needing to be part of an organization?

I have also developed a small policy against abusive students/parents:

-If a student is abusive towards ME, the session will be stopped.
-If a parent is abusive towards me, the session will be stopped and any future sessions may be cancelled depending on what has happened.
-If a parent is abusive towards their child, the session will be stopped AND the Aussie version of CPS will be called.
-If I am not paid for any session, then sessions will be stopped until I am paid for services owed.

I am also debating the possibility of doubling up students i.e. if there are siblings who need assistance. How would I go about this?

I'm not sure what tutoring is normally priced at in Australia, nor of the exchange rate to US dollars, but I don't think you're charging enough.

My BF's dad is a tutor, and the least he charges is $40 an hour. Which is absolutely dirt cheap for tutoring.

Personally, if my kid needed tutoring, I don't think I'd send them to someone who charged that little. I'd be worried that they weren't actually any good.

I'd say charge at least $40/hour, maybe an extra 50% for a sib, provided they need help in the same subjects.

Arctic, bear in mind that I do not have any formal teaching qualifications as opposed to someone who does. Thanks for the help.

Doesn't matter about the qualifications. My dad's best friend has a degree in engineering, works as an insurance agent and charges $100/hr for algebra tutoring. Anything past Calc II and that becomes $150/hr. And he gets it. He has a waiting list. No formal teaching qualifications, either.

$20 p/h is really cheap! I'd be expecting to pay more, even for a primary school child. You'll have tons of customers, stick to your policy about abusive customers because you'll probably have a waiting list to pick and choose from.

About the police check, here's the site for it: http://www.police.sa.gov.au/sapol/se...ice_checks.jsp

Which is why I only said $40. You can charge more when you've got some experience. BF's dad doesn't have any teaching qualifications, either, but he pretty much supports the family on tutoring.
