  • Gearing up for battle

Okay, this situation is a little complicated so I'll condense it as much as I can. I am a transcriptionist. I type transcripts for courts in my home state. I work in a big office with 30 or 40 other typists. Because the management don't really understand human nature (being some kind of rodent-like creatures themselves) the typist are all sorted into teams of about seven in order to hold little meetings to increase productivity. How forcing us to stop typing for 15 minutes twice a month is meant to make us type more, I don't know. That's not the problem, though, that's just the set up.

Management wanted us to come up with names for our groups, and while I was sick my group came up with what has been our name ever since; The Trannies.

Yes, the Trannies. Short for transcriptionists, obviously, with a side helping of an offensive term for transgendered people. It's like calling us the Faggots because we're fond of bundling sticks together.

I objected immediately, asking a few people in my group if they'd mind changing the name. They didn't see why, because, "We're not meaning it like that." I flat out stated that I didn't care how it was meant, I wasn't comfortable using a derogatory term for trans people as a joke name. I eventually had to out myself to those team members, admitting that I'm gay (something I had avoided doing because I work with a hellova lot of conservative middle-aged and elderly women) and telling them that I wouldn't accept the use of a derogatory word for people in a subculture I'm a part of. It doesn't help that I have some gender identity issues (I am tentitively identifying as genderqueer right now, but I'm still working out where exactly on the spectrum I lie) so it's a sensitive topic for me. The women I talked to agreed and said we could bring it up at the next team meeting.

Cut to now, a few months later, and management is finally forcing us to go to the meetings again. I overhear one of the women I told telling someone else in our group that I wanted to change the name and why, and ten minutes later I've got a war on my hands.

Half of my group is up in arms because they don't want to change the name. They say it's not offensive because they don't mean it to be. I say fuck that, I wouldn't let you call us the Dykes so I'm not going to let you call us the Trannies. I know it seems petty to cause so much fuss over a name of a group I don't care about, but I don't want to be associated with transphobia even in a minor way like that. It's not okay and I'm sticking to that.

What I'm really looking for are ways to explain myself and my feelings on it without resorting to A) outing myself as being on the trans spectrum or B) calling everyone else raging fuckwits. I need some way to make them - or at least management - see that using a term that's offensive to trans people is just as bad as using racist or sexist ones.

    /long thread is LONG.

TL;DR version: need to convince management that transphobia is just as bad as homophobia and racism. Thoughts/COmments/Suggestions?
I'm busy, you're an idiot, have a nice day

Use other words that provide similar connotations.

(your example) They wouldn't like being called the "Faggots" because they like bundling sticks together.

They wouldn't like being called the Niggardlies because they're stingy and cheap.

They wouldn't like being called the Queers just because they have odd tastes.

They wouldn't like being called the Retards because they're fire resistant.

The list there can go on for a long while. And make sure to use some examples like the last one: Even if they were fire resistant (a positive attribute), they wouldn't like being called the Retards.

Make it clear that 'trannies' is derogatory, as Pederson implied.

Tell them that to anyone who is informed about 'fringe' or 'alternative' culture, they may as well be a group of men calling themselves 'the pussies', or .. well, use Pederson's examples.

But the key thing is to make it clear that the term is derogatory.

Tell them that the name is sexually harassing and if it is not changed you will go to HR about it and file a complaint. Hell, I am firmly happy to be female and nowhere near trans on the grand spectrum of life and I would object to trannies as a team name on the grounds that it is sexually harassing.

Isn't "trannies" also an offensive term aimed at transients, what used to be called vagrants?

I will be honest and say that I never heard it used for that in any industry I have worked in. I can find it believable that trannies could be used in that manner. I would still find trannies objectionable for that as well.

              LANGUAGE!!!!

If they have no problem with "Trannies" as a name, ask them how they'd feel about calling themselves the "Crips." After all, that is as much a part of the name of your job title as "trannies" is. But something tells me they woudn't like being called the name of a notoriously violent Los Angeles street gang.

If you want to get extreme, you can talk to the various people in the group.

Ask any Hispanics in the groups if they'd object to being called the "Spics."
Ask any African-Americans if they'd object to be being called the "Niggers."
Ask any Jews in the group if they'd object to being called the "Kikes."
Ask any Italians in the group if they'd object to being called the "Dagos."

Etcetera, etcetera. Yes, those names are all very offensive to the groups they are used to describe. Just as "trannies" is offensive to another group. And that's the point. Sometimes, you really do have to use a sledgehammer on a fly to make your point.

Alternatively, you could quietly go to HR or management and mention that the chosen name of the group could be considered offensive to transgendered people, and that by keeping it they do run the risk of having an anti-discrimination lawsuit filed against them. You don't even have to out yourself. You can merely act like you're trying to work in the best interests of the company.

"Crips" also refers to "cripples", in a derogatory way.

I've always found it amusing that a gang chooses to call themselves the cripples. :P

An alternative to suggest would be 'The Scribes'. Since you are tranSCRIBing. And 'scribe' implies merely that a person is literate (and usually numerate) and makes their living from being literate. Which you do.

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions. The meeting is tomorrow and I'm nervous as hell - I tend to panic during confrontations and I'm just hoping I can keep my shit together for long enough to get my argument out.

I think I'm going to avoid race-based examples, though, partially because I'm not sure my lilly-white arse can get away with it and partially because there are a grand total of two non-caucasians in my entire office, and none of them are in this group so they may not care. I'll probably use the 'Faggot' and 'Retard' examples, though. And I like "Scribes" as a replacement name, because I just know that someone will want to know what I would prefer the name to be, if I'm being so pedantic.

The battle was fought and won, thank god. They didn't get why I was offended, but I managed to talk the majority of them over to my side so the name got changed. Only one of them actually got why it was offensive when I explained it to them, another few just said, "Well, it's not offensive but if you're offended then we can change it, I'm not all that attached to the name." The other said, "It's not offensive, we shouldn't have to change the name just because someone is offended." But she was outvoted, and even though none of them really get why it upset me in the first place they've agreed to change it.

Holy macaroni. That woman...just....wow. Just wow. Being the slightly vindictive person that I can be on occasion, I'd just about suggest hanging on to that little phrase until its a great time to put it right back in her face.

I don't understand people like that. Seriously.

But I'm super glad to hear you got them to change it though! Pity that none of them were more comprehending. Oh well, maybe at the very least, the seeds were planted, so they'll eventually get it.
