Are you going print or electronic, or both? Your marketing will depend on what medium the book is available in.

Electronic, at least for the time being. I haven't received a response from my friend yet.

In that case, post it on your blog, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Goodreads, etc. Send .pdf advance copies to bloggers who review books of this type. Get it on Amazon, B&N, Smashwords, and any other retail website you can think of. Consider buying ads on related websites. Put it in a signature on every board where you post.

There's a lot of e-books out there right now, you have to stand out!

There is one other important thing.

I just looked at it, and it only comes to about 60 pages. I can illustrate it - the book was written for illustrations - but, well, the text is pretty short.

Short is not a bad thing (like a skirt, right? Long enough to cover everything, short enough to be interesting) but you have to price it accordingly.

I was thinking this morning that 1.99 might be the right price. You can (and do) pay more than that for a used book, even one approximately the same length as mine.

Now I'm wondering about cover art.

Cover art can be very important, I honestly think the biggest mistake that my father-in-law made when he published his book was letting someone he knows do the cover art. Don't get me wrong the guy was a good artist but FIL was unable to give the guy honest, critical feedback and ended up with a cover that had some cool artwork but that didn't exactly work with words and stuff on top of it and therefor it looks kind of unprofessional as a book cover.

Yeah, I'm going to do it myself. I'm waiting for inspiration. A humorous image. I have a couple ideas kicking around in my mind, but nothing concrete.

In the meantime, is anyone interested in taking a look at one of my blogs and giving me an honest opinion of the writing quality? The book isn't based on a blog, but at least you'll see how I write. Apart from my posts here, that is.

Are you talking about the one you are linked to in your sig?

You know, this is something I've been battling with myself over for the past year. When I finished my first book, I tried to get it published - nothing. So I did it via Lulu, just to get it out of the way. That was a mistake, but I'll get to that in a moment.

I wrote a second book, completely different to the first. Not so much what I want to write, but what I can write. Turned out pretty well.

Now I've been going back and forth. Do I want to try and sell it? Do I want to try and self pub, going specifically the ebook/kindle store route? If I wanted to try and self pub, I'd need to get myself an editor, which is an extra cost I'm unsure of at the moment. If I wanted to sell it, it's unlikely it'd get picked up, partly cause of the self-pub from before, partly because I'm not sure they'd see a market for the second.

This has been going on for a year, and every time I think I get an answer, I end up back at square one. It's kept me from actually writing any more.

Still, reading this thread has me thinking maybe self pub, ebook would be best, for me at least. Just have to find an editor and actually save up they money I'd need to do that - which I recommend you also do, Eireann, once you have the illustrations you want in place.

(Of course, in two hours, I'll be thinking differently. Anyone know a good resource for finding editors/costs that I can start looking into to give myself a kick in the ass?)

No, this is a different blog.

Maybe we should set up a cross-editing agreement, where everyone here who has written a book gives it to someone else for editing. Thoughts?

If you post or send me the link, I will take a look.

Mind you, I'm not much into blowing smoke up people's asses. If you ask me to tell you what I think, I'm going to tell you what I think.

If you say you want to publish it, I'm going to respect you enough to be honest with you.
