  • Just need pointed in the right direction.

My husband got a letter stating that he had excess funds from the tax sale of some old property. We've both been trying to research how to collect the funds but are just getting more and more confused. Money is extremely tight right now so hiring an attorney isn't really feasible.

If anyone could just tell us how to locate the forms, it would be a huge help.

Around here, tax sales are handled by the town or city in which the property resides (they want their money).

Your city hall had no information at all to give you?

Have you tried contacting the people who sent the letter? Without knowing your location it's kinda hard to point you in a specific direction since each state is different.

It was a legitimate, certified letter from the county in Texas where the sale took place. (sorry, I guess my location would have helped ) .

He tried contacting the office but they told him in more or less polite terms to research it himself or get a lawyer. It's not even a huge amount of money but at this point any little bit helps.

Try contacting the council again, but this time through the council's contact information as obtained from the white pages, or the council's own website.

That 'research it yourself or get a lawyer' sounds either really rude or really suspicious.

Try the city hall in the county where the sale took place. They should have record of the sale, and if it was a tax sale the county treasury would probably be the one to issue a refund. A quick search online for "Texas property tax sale refund" gives links to several different counties contact info.
