When I went to move out on my own for the first time I found this checklist invaluable:

I never have told Saydrah thanks for writing it.

I overlooked one big thing: internet. Can't do without that because my income is depends on writing and I need the internet for research and communicating with clients.

I'm using Virgin Mobile for cell service and it seems that they sell wireless hotspot devices for $80 and prepaid unlimited service for $50/month, so that's something else to keep in mind now.

      Whatever you do.

      Don't forget the toilet paper.

Nothing like settling in to your new place, and suddenly having the horrible realization that OMG THERE IS NO TP.

....Its more likely than you think. <.<
Great advice, seeing as I hadn't even thought about toilet paper yet

Just spent about 30 minutes going through the list and cross-checking, and I did find a few things we need that we hadn't considered yet. Thanks for posting this!

You can always just get a futon mattress without the frame, or buy a twin mattress, that is what my friends did for guests but they didn't have the space to have a futon all the time. When either mattress isn't in use its stored under the bed, or if you can or want use it for more seating, it can be a 2nd couch/day bed.
You can get either of those, and keep them under your bed when you move, then take it if you happen to have guests over.

Look at garage sales for the the things you need. You can find some great deals if you look.

I have to throw my voice behind "buy used when possible". I bought a couch, a chair, a coffee table and a TV stand at a second-hand store for $50. Just make sure there are no serious structural defects and the cosmetics are generally easy to take care of.

A followup on the bed question:
Yes, I meant buying just the mattress/futon, no frame. They are light years more comfortable then any air mattress I have slept on, and comparable in price. Obviously, you can't just deflate it and ditch it in the closet, but depending on the size you can put it onto of your bed, or under it.

              also, internet:
Check with the landlord/other tenants about internet in the house before buying a mobile device. All of the share houses I saw in college towns had internet all set up, and people just split the bill.

Almost any air mattress is going to make your 300lb and tall boyfriend very uncomfortable if used for a long time. My fiance is tall and large and cannot use air matresses due to his size (he even said not to try it when I talked to him about it). Most are not meant to be used for a long time. I would recommend a mattress on the floor. Sometimes you can get like new mattresses second hand for cheap (as long as the thought doesn't squick you out).
