  • Ordering online vs. ordering at a local gaming store

My husband and I play Pathfinder Society Organized play at a local gaming store every other weekend. We don't buy all of our supplies from the store but we do try to patronize it, since it's locally owned and they allow our gaming group to play there for free.

About a week and a half ago, we stopped in at the gaming store to pick up a few things, namely a new book and some new miniatures. We get the unpainted pewter minis and paint them ourselves, and we usually get a new mini any time we make a new character, so we have custom minis for all of our characters. Well, we couldn't find any minis that we liked for the characters we were looking to make, so we asked the guy working if he had any more or when he'd get more in. He said what they had out was all they had in stock now, but that they re-order every week and we could look through the catalog of the company they get their minis from and they could order any of them with their normal weekly order.

So we go through the catalog and pick several out, since we each have a few characters that don't have custom minis yet. We tell the guy working the desk which ones we wants and he writes them down, along with our name and phone number, in a special orders book. He tells us orders are placed on Sunday and that they normally get them in on Tuesday and that we'd get a call once our order was in.

Well, Tuesday comes and goes and we don't hear from them. On Wednesday, I call and tell the person who answered the phone (not the same person as who we dealt with last week) that we had placed an order and were told it would be in on Tuesday. He checks the system and nope, our order isn't in yet. He said that when we were told to expect them on Tuesday, that it was only an estimate (the person we placed the order with never said this, he sounded very sure when he said they would arrive on Tuesday and never said it was an estimate or anything.) I asked the person on the phone if he had any idea when we could expect our order and he said that someone would call us when our order comes in, but that he can't give me any more information about it.

It's now Friday and we still haven't heard back. I am not upset at the gaming store but I am wondering if we should just order the minis ourselves. We are very familiar with the company that makes them and we can easily order them online, we know the product#s and everything and the manufacturer does take orders on their website. We wanted to patronize the local gaming store...but they are being kind of lame about this. The guy I talked to on the phone didn't even know if our order had been placed yet.

We're not in a BIG rush to get the minis, it's not like we can't play without them. On the other hand, we could have had them by now if we had ordered them online.

I'm thinking of giving it till early next week (by then it will be 2 weeks since we placed the order) and then telling the game store to forget it and order them ourselves.

I'm actually in the same boat. I ordered some minis about six months ago, and my order still isn't in. :<

I order everything I need from the local hobby store since I spend, well spent, lots of time there and want to support it. Then again the owner is the only one that works there and runs it. One big ting can be the distributor being a pain in the ass and not getting the order out, but it sounds like that certain employees in this store just don't seem to care to send the order out?

I am all for local support but if they don't value it, by not ordering your items, I wouldn't lose any sleep about ordering them online.

I like dealing with local merchants, but you have to know the local merchant wants to do special orders. At this time, you don't know who fell down on the job.

You might want to take this opportunity to get to know the store better. Stop in and talk with them. Ask more about the process. Who does what. Learn names. Ask about other items they can order. And, of course, buy stuff. Make sure that they know you, and they see you as a good customer.
