  • Somehow I got a free iPad....WTF?

    ...without doing a thing.

So my tax refund came in. Great, fine. I proceed to then purchase an iPad through the online store of a bricks-and-mortar retailer. (for the Aussies, think black and yellow and "they've done it again") I used a Visa Debit card (not a credit card and not a gift card, but I can use all credit functions except it's with my own money) with the option of click-and-collect. In this case, the store had marked that it would do same day pickup (if the order was placed before 3pm) or next day pickup (if it was placed after 3pm).

My order gets flagged for an ID check. Ok, understandable given that it's an expensive item. So I scan and send off my ID (front only, not back).

2 days pass, nothing happens. Given they had advertised same day delivery, I get annoyed and go online, asking the store I had nominated as my pickup just what was going on. A bit of back and forth reveals that nobody had seen my ID attachment. So I re-sent my ID, realising that the problem may have been that my attachment was too bulky.

ID check comes back fine. I should add that the money has STILL not been taken out by the online store and I gave them until Monday, given that the money HAD been held for such a long period of time and the ID image should've gone through OK.

Monday rolls around. I pick up my new toy. I play with it for a bit.

Today (wednesday) I install the app for my bank and check my balance as a test. It reveals that where previously my "current balance" vs. "available balance" were different (since the online purchase had been marked as "pending"), I now suddenly had an extra $500 in my account.

2 phone calls to the bank and one long back-and-forth between the online retailer via email and I'm now very confused.

The bank's version is that the charge expired on Tuesday , meaning that while the retailer had authorized it (otherwise I wouldn't have been able to pick up my iPad), nothing actually came out of my account.

The retailer's version is that the payment was authorized the day I picked it up (the Monday) and that they have the money. They hadn't accidentally refunded it or anything. (one of my questions) and they repeated twice that they HAD authorised it, finally closing their email with "no further charges will be taken in this matter."

    Me:

I'm trying to be honest with this: I definitely paid for it (I have receipts showing that I paid for it via email, the store is showing I paid in the online history and I have a receipt showing I picked it up) and I don't want to be marked as a scammer who somehow managed to get an ipad for free. On top of that, no credits have been shown in my account from the company or otherwise, meaning that they didn't refund me after I raised the issue the first time. Can anyone tell me what the hell I should do?

I would just wait. To the retailer, it does look like you paid though they will figure it out later if the bank is right about what happened. Or the bank is wrong and you will see it disappear in a few days or on your next statement.

You already called them so they should have a record of it. Leave the money as is so that it's available when they want to collect if the first case is correct.

Oh don't worry, I plan on leaving it there for a while.

I actually confirmed with the bank twice and the email conversation went to 9 emails. >.>

I've also decided that in future, I don't plan on using this company for online store purchases. I will go in their brick-and-mortar stores (especially because their service and range is better in-store), but not going online.

Definitely a bank error, and most likely it's the processor's fault.

My boyfriend had this happen with Walmart. We currently still haven't paid for his CE of Diablo III because of this very issue.

My guess is that you'll be getting a letter in the mail requesting payment, as the charge itself has expired and can't be re-initiated on their end.

I wouldn't worry too much, just keep the money on-hand, so if the retailer asks for the money, you can give it to them. I don't think they can do anything else and would be ill-advised to try, in any event. (although do watch out for any attempt at charging you for late payment, since you did in fact offer payment at the time.)

When this happened to my mom, she kept the money in the account, and marked it down as spent in her handwritten register, until the statute of limitations ran out on the purchase. The company never did request payment, and after a while it dawned on her that while it was a large purchase to our family, it was a small amount to the company, and not worth the cost to track down the missing payment. But if they decided they wanted it, the money was ready and waiting to be handed over, no problem. (She also used the experience to teach teenage-me how to responsibly and ethically handle billing mix-ups and keep my account in the positive... much more useful than her lesson on sorting laundry!)

Well, luckily, the bank solved it. A quick check five minutes ago confirmed that the bank finally realised "whoops, we screwed up!" and paid.
