  • Question for ladies (may be TMI) - post coital UTI's

Okay I need to pick your brains.

I'll be seeing my fiance for the first time in over a year next Sunday when I move to NH. I'm giddy beyond measure.

    BUT

I'm prone to getting UTI's when I'm sexually active, and the last 2 times we've been together, I've gotten them. I'm sure to keep clean, at my Dr's suggestion, I make sure that I urinate after we have sex, but I still get them.

Anybody here prone to post-coital UTI's have any suggestions on how to prevent them from happening beforehand? I've tried the cranberry juice/pills route before and that didn't help at all.

    Any advice very welcome!!!

Since I've never experienced getting a UTI, this might be a very silly question, but anyhoo...

Were you treated with antibiotics after the 2 previous UTI's? Could it be an idea to take some antibiotics a couple of days in advance, as a preemptive strike? Of course, you might want to discuss that with your doctor first.

EDIT: Checked my local WebMD page, and it suggests the same things that your Dr mentioned. On the other hand, I saw that post-coital UTI is also called "Honey Moon Cystite", so you might want to do a google search on that.

      Ah, Honeymoon Cystitis.. I sympathise

I had some episodes of that a while ago & to be honest, the above suggestions didn't really work for me either, but a 2-3 day course of antibiotics did.

In fact, when I needed a 3rd course of them, my doc prescribed me a few extra just in case so I could take one or 2 in the day after sex to head off another UTI. You will need to definitely talk to your doctor about anything like that.

Please note I am not a doctor, and this is just what my doc, who knows me & my medication history prescribed for me.

      Good luck for your move

I've been down that route. Not pretty.

I think by the third time, I had an ultrasound to rule out any abnormalities (only thing we did discover was a retroverted uterus, which apparently makes me more prone to UTI's...go figure). I was given some very powerful antibiotics, can't remember what they were called though.

ONly suggestion I can offer is peeing after sex, as it helps flush out any toxins.

Are you using condoms? You may be experiencing an allergy to the spermicide or the latex which presents like a UTI - at least it does for me.

No we don't use condoms - I had a hyster 8 years ago so there's no need. I'll see if my Dr can give me some antibiotics to have on hand just in case.

              Cranberries.

Research regularly indicates that cranberry juice drinkers are less prone to UTI's and bladder infections.

Unless you have an allergy or some other condition that they'd be a problem, it certainly couldn't hurt.

I've tried that before but unfortunately it didn't work for me. A friend just told me that white tea is supposed to be a preventative so I might give that a try.

Was it actual cranberries, a cranberry juice, a cocktail, or something else?

Best results tend to be from either whole cranberries or a straight cranberry drink. The cocktails and cranberry supplements were often less so for reasons of completeness and content by volume.

Oh, and I don't know that I saw this mentioned, but drink lots of fluids. The more you urinate, the less time stuff has to stick around and cause problems.

Cranberry juice cocktails most likely have added sugar which probably doesn't help, either.

The hysterectomy makes a caveat about antibiotics a moot point for you, but for others with the problem, here it is:

Antibiotics from the tetracycline family don't "play nice" with hormonal birth control. I'm not a doctor, but for anyone on the pill/patch/NuvaRing/etc., it would be a good idea to ask your doctor about interactions between any antibiotic you get prescribed and your birth control, and for how long you need to keep up alternate precautions (my WAG would be until the first period after discontinuing the antibiotics) to avoid a visit from the stork.

When washing the area, wash gently.

Just water is good. Certain soap substitutes are better for the delicate skin than soap is - discuss the issue with a pharmacist.

Pat, rather than wipe, when using toilet paper. Consider using baby wipes instead of TP, at least at the front.

Consider using a barrier cream (eg, diaper-rash ointments). Again, discuss the issue with a pharmacist.

Use a medical-grade lubricant, or a lubricant with a base which cannot support bacteria/virii. Yet again, I recommend a discussion with a handy pharmacist!

Always wash front-to-back, always dry front-to-back, etc etc.

I hope all of this helps!

                        3. Deal with the situation you have now, however it occurred.
                        4. Accept the consequences of your decisions.

Strong Cranberry juice - a couple of glasses a day. Don't water it down as others have said.

Other than that talk to the doc to get a pre-prescription so you don't have to wait when you do need it.

I'm also prone and I'll get symptoms that never develop into anything but make me panic for awhile.

Have you tried uva ursa? It's a natural antibiotic. There's a lot of stuff you have to avoid while on it - anything acidic will make it less effective.

Alternatively, you can go the other way. 2-5 grams of Vitamin C, avoiding sugar and caffiene, can kill it off before you need antibiotics if you catch it soon enough. It should work as a preventative as well.

If you don't like cranberry juice (and I don't blame you) blueberries have the same benefits. Pineapple is also a mild antibiotic (but there are some antibiotics you aren't supposed to take it with). Avoiding caffeine and anything else that dehydrates you can help too.

I've found the best remedy for me is to get up immediately and pee and possibly shower. (It sounds like you're doing that, but I'm just throwing stuff out there). If you like to take baths, like me, rinsing down there with just water can help too.

Patiokitty, I've had a doctor tell me it can also be a symptom for diabetes in the lady. I keep meaning to get tested, but I don't like doctors...

I had this problem for the first 2 years I was active. I got a UTI every 2 weeks until we started using condoms. After a few years of always using the darn things, we wanted to get pregnant, and tried without again. For whatever reason, that problem seems to have gone away. *shrug* The doctor has no suggestions as to why that worked for me, but it may be worth a try.
