  • Glad to be here

Hi! I'm Aut, wife of 13 years and mom to four. For the last 7 years, I have been a stay-at-home working mom. I, or rather we, are resident managers of a small self storage facility. Mainly, it's me as the man works outside the home. I've been here way too long, and would like to get my life back because this place eats up so much time. We don't get a whole lot of traffic here, but our 9-5 M-Sat office hours keeps me tied here.

Being located in a rather low income area with 8 apartment complexes within view from the property makes it 'interesting' sometimes. I've had my fair share of complaints about the neighbors and their guests as well as seeing many of the local tv news reporters in the flesh because of the shenanegans around here (thankfully it's been pretty calm the last year). We also get some pretty colorful characters that rent here from time to time.

Our situation here is unique to the typical resident manager situation. And sometimes I get questions about it. I usually try to give vague answers because as you will see, it's hard for some people to swallow, but it's what works for us. We don't get paid to do this. Instead we get a pretty low rent for this size of house as well as utilities paid. You don't often see houses on properties like this. On the other hand, we don't do much of the work either. I'm the pretty face in the office that takes rent, signs leases, opens/closes the gate, and answers the phone. We have a great owner that will come fill in at the office when I have to be elsewhere. I'm also in school so he's here while I'm at class.

I look forward to reading other's horror stories as well as sharing my own.

Thanks! I guess I spoke too soon about it being pretty quiet around here. The next day I had the noon news on, heard the name of my street, looked at the screen and saw my house. A small child had been found wandering alone across the street right about the time I left to take the kids to school, and the police were called. It was all clear when I got home, so I had no idea anything had happened until the news. That afternoon, news crews were all lined up across the street. Then apparantly something happened that night to make the police swarm 3 of the apartment complexes.
