  • Hi everyone! I'm from tourist town, VT!

Hello! I've been around a long time, because just READING your stories makes going to work as a server me so much...hmm...happier about the good customers and secretly laughing about the other ones. So, to start off, I've been working at a tourist town in middle VT. My restaurant thankfully had no part in the flooding, so we closed for only one night due to understandably low business and work was on the next day!

So, to start off with an EW: I walk over, it's only her and her son, they are waiting on her husband. She starts off with saying, "So, I've been here several times, and I love the food. That is the ONLY reason I come back, because the service has been so slow, I'm disappointed." I asked her, "Well, have you come back since the renovation?" (Things have changed drastically since June: New pizza oven, we now have an expo and food runner every night, everything runs much smoother and faster now). EW says, "Yes, it was still slow." I tell her I've been here 2 years, so I"ll make sure everything comes out as ordered. "Hmmph. Maybe your expertise will make things better."

"My husband will be here in about 20 minutes. I'd like a large sausage pizza and a small Treehugger and a salad which I will share with my husband." "Tomato sauce or white base?" "RED."

I broght her salad as soon as it was ready, and put a note on the pizza ticket, ready for 6. I brought it to table just as her husband was walking to the table. Awesome timing, right?

NO! "What is THIS? I asked for (such and such) Why does it have onions on it?"
"Well, you asked for the Treehugger, it has onions, I can show you the menu if you'd like." DID I ask for this? NO!" So I get her a new pizza, meanwhile I can hear her talking to her husband about how I've been here for 2 years, blah blah. I bring her the new pizza, ask her if she'd like the other one boxed up, I end up tossing the "bad one" to the servers. Discount on new pizza, old pizza comped.

Really? A. I don't write down something people don't say, and I ALWAYS write down orders, even if it's 2 H2Os I write it down. B. EW. That's all. Thankfully, her husband paid, gratefully ate a fresh hot pizza and tipped me 20%. Still, Grrrr.

This is why I hate foodservice. People lose the ability to communicate what they want. Then I get blamed.
"Is it hot in here to you? It's very warm, isn't it?"--Nero, probably

Another fellow Vermonter! I can't believe how homesick I am for Vermont, but I'm so glad to see a sudden serge of new people from Vermont.

Welcome aboard. Native Southern Vermonter myself. Let me put it this way, you probably heard about my town in recent news. And if not, google Car in the River or look for it on Youtube.

Yup, I know the Car in the River vid. So sad . My apartment got a little bit of soaked carpet and moldiness of clothing that was on the floor at the time. I feel soo horrible for Waterbury and other areas that got the actual floods. The local newspapers do a great job reporting it, and I'm buying an "Irene, you bitch" shirt from a VT artist who lost her home. http://woodstockearlyworm.wordpress....itch-t-shirts/

            Welcome!

I'm a survivor of the foodservice industry as well (but not currently employed--long story!)

It certainly seems food service workers get more than our share of the crazies!!! Looking forward to hearing some of your stories
